Sonic vs Oscillating Electric Toothbrush

Oscillating brushes turn a small round head back and forth, sonic brushes vibrate an oval head side to side; sonic is the most common motion we list.

The short answer

Electric toothbrushes clean with one of two main motions. An oscillating-rotating brush has a small round head that turns quickly back and forth, one tooth at a time. A sonic brush has an oval head, shaped more like a manual brush, that vibrates side to side at high speed. Both are designed to remove plaque; the right one is the one you will use twice a day for the full two minutes.

What the research says

A 2014 Cochrane review pooled 56 trials with 5,068 participants comparing powered and manual brushes. After more than three months of use, powered brushes reduced plaque by 21% and gum inflammation (gingivitis) by 11% compared with manual brushes. The rotation oscillation type had the most trials and showed clear reductions at both time points. The authors rated the evidence moderate and said the long-term clinical benefit was still unclear.

The review did not list sonic brushes as their own group, so it does not settle sonic against oscillating head to head.

Is an electric toothbrush worth it?

The American Dental Association says both manual and powered brushes can clean teeth well, so the choice comes down to what you prefer. It adds that a powered brush may be easier for people who find a manual brush hard to use. Whichever kind you pick, the ADA suggests looking for its Seal of Acceptance. Wiki Shopping lists ADA-accepted electric toothbrushes on their own page.

Power is the other big split: 196 are rechargeable and 91 run on replaceable batteries; the rest do not say. Features such as a timer and pressure sensors have their own filter pages.

How often to replace an electric toothbrush head

The ADA advises replacing a toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed. It does not give a separate schedule for electric brush heads, so the same rule is a reasonable guide, and the brush maker's own instructions may give a specific interval. Toothbrushes sold with 8 or more heads cover a longer stretch before you need to buy refills.

How we count

Each toothbrush on Wiki Shopping has its motion and power type read from the store listing. A toothbrush has at most one motion and one power type; listings that give none are counted as "Not stated". The counts change as listings are added or removed.
