Murphy Bed Sizes and Wall Space, Explained
A vertical queen Murphy bed needs a wall about 64 to 68 inches wide and 87 to 89 inches tall, and opens about 85 to 87 inches into the room.

The short answer
A Murphy bed is named by the mattress it holds: twin, full, queen or king. To plan the space, you need three more numbers: the cabinet's width and height on the wall, its depth when closed, and how far the bed reaches into the room when it is open (the projection).
The bed can fold up in two ways:
- Vertical: the head of the bed is at the wall and the bed folds up lengthwise. It needs a tall wall.
- Horizontal: the long side of the bed is at the wall and it folds up sideways. It needs a wide wall but much less height.

A vertical bed can be entered from either side. A horizontal bed is against the wall on one long side, so you get in from the other side only.
Measuring your wall
- Width: measure the free wall and compare it with the cabinet width. Side cabinets, if you add them, come in 18, 24 or 30 inch widths each in Amerisleep's guide.
- Height: for a vertical bed, check the ceiling against the cabinet height, with room to install it.
- Floor: make sure the floor in front of the wall is clear for at least the open projection. Amerisleep suggests 30 to 36 inches of open space on each side of the bed to move around.
- Overhead: with the bed down, check that a ceiling fan or light fixture does not get in the way.
The exact numbers vary by model, so use the maker's dimensions for the bed you choose.
Choosing a mattress
Amerisleep says most Murphy beds are designed for mattresses about 12 inches thick, and it recommends foam or latex, since innerspring and hybrid mattresses can bunch when stored upright for long periods. Mattress sizes themselves are in our bed sizes chart.
