Pool Pumps: Single vs Variable Speed and Horsepower

A single speed pool pump runs flat out, while a variable speed pump slows down for filtering, which ENERGY STAR says cuts energy use sharply.

The short answer

A pool pump pushes water through the filter, and the motor's speed control is the biggest difference between models:

  • Single speed: one fixed speed. ENERGY STAR calls these conventional pumps and notes that the fixed speed is often faster than filtering needs.
  • Dual speed: a high and a low setting.
  • Variable speed: the speed can be set to fit the task, slow for daily filtering and faster for vacuuming or a cleaner.

If the pump runs many hours a day, the ability to slow down is where most of the energy savings come from.

Why slower is cheaper

ENERGY STAR explains that filtering needs roughly half the flow that running a pool cleaner does. A pump that can drop to a lower speed for filtering stops wasting that extra power. The agency puts it in plain numbers: cutting pump speed in half lets the pump use about one eighth of the energy. Slower water also puts less strain on the filter and plumbing.

ENERGY STAR also says a pool pump can be a home's second largest energy user, and it lists these savings for certified pumps:

Above-ground11% lessAbout $20 a year

The federal rule on pool pumps

Federal efficiency standards for dedicated purpose pool pumps apply to pumps made starting July 19, 2021, according to the rule text at 10 CFR 431.465. The strictest class covers self-priming filter pumps rated from 0.711 to under 2.5 hydraulic horsepower. When the rule was set, Pool and Spa News reported that this range is about 1 to 5 horsepower in motor terms and that only variable speed pumps met the standard at the time. Smaller self-priming pumps, non-self-priming pumps and pressure cleaner booster pumps have their own, lower targets.

What horsepower to look for

Hydraulic horsepower, the figure the federal rule uses, measures the work the pump does on the water; the motor horsepower on a box is a different number. A bigger motor is not automatically better. A pump that moves more water than the filter and pipes are built for wastes energy, and ENERGY STAR notes that faster water puts more strain on the filter and plumbing. A practical way to choose:

  • Replacing a pump: start from the old pump's rating and the filter's maximum flow.
  • In-ground pool: look at variable speed models, which let you dial the flow down.
  • Above ground pool: many pumps are sold as a set with a sand or cartridge filter.

On Wiki Shopping, 13 pool pumps list 1.5 HP and 8 list 1 HP. For speed, 14 are variable speed and 7 are dual speed.

How we count

Groups are read from each pump's store listing on October 27, 2026, out of 69 pool pumps listed. A pump can appear in more than one group, and pumps that do not state a feature are left out of that count. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
