Robotic vs Suction vs Pressure Pool Cleaners

Suction and pressure cleaners run off your pool's pump and filter, while a robotic cleaner has its own motors and filter and costs more to buy.

The short answer

Automatic pool cleaners come in three kinds, named for what powers them:

  • Suction-side: connects by hose to the skimmer or a vacuum line and is pulled along by your pool pump. Simple, and the cheapest kind to buy.
  • Pressure-side: driven by water pushed out of the pool's return line, on most models with an extra booster pump. Handles leaves and larger debris, which it catches in its own bag.
  • Robotic: plugs into its own power supply or runs on a battery, with its own motors and filter. It works independently of your pool's pump and filter.

This breakdown follows the overview of automated pool cleaners on Wikipedia.

The main weakness of a suction cleaner is that it shares the pool pump. It reduces the pump's suction for skimming, and large debris such as leaves can clog it or the pump basket. Both suction and pressure cleaners also rely on the pool's filter, so they cannot catch particles finer than that filter can. A pressure cleaner's booster pump makes it the heaviest user of electricity of the three.

Is a robotic pool cleaner worth it?

It depends on your pool and your budget. A robot scrubs with its own brushes, filters water in its own basket and does not load the main pump, and many models climb walls and pause at the waterline. The trade-off is the higher price and a heavier unit to lift out: Maytronics notes that robots can weigh up to 27 pounds dry, and a cordless model also has to come out of the water to charge.

On Wiki Shopping, robots are the bulk of the range. Of the 183 pool cleaners listed on October 26, 2026, 113 are robotic, 28 suction-side and 12 pressure-side. Among all cleaners, 62 list wall climbing, 58 are cordless, 45 list waterline cleaning and 36 offer app or Wi-Fi control. For pool type, 62 are for in-ground pools, 22 for above-ground pools and 35 for both.

How long does a robotic pool cleaner last?

Makers do not publish one lifespan figure; it depends on use and care. Maytronics, maker of Dolphin robots, lists the habits that keep a robot working for years:

  • Rinse the filter right after each use, before debris dries onto it.
  • Clean the impeller every two weeks, with the power disconnected.
  • Rinse the robot in fresh water, since chlorine and salt wear plastic parts.
  • Keep the robot and its power supply out of strong sun when not in use.
  • Coil the cable to stop it tangling, and clear toys and goggles from the pool first.

Its buying advice also points to parts that are easy to replace and a solid warranty, which matter more over the years than any single feature.

How we count

Cleaner type, features and pool type are read from each pool cleaner's store listing. Cleaners that do not state them are left out of those counts. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
