Treadmill Specs: Horsepower, CHP and Watts

Compare continuous horsepower (CHP), not peak horsepower; walkers need about 2.0 CHP, joggers about 2.5 and regular runners 3.0 or more.

On this page
Bar chart converting treadmill motor ratings to watts. 2.0 CHP is 1,491 watts, 2.5 CHP is 1,864 watts, 3.0 CHP is 2,237 watts, 3.5 CHP is 2,610 watts and 4.0 CHP is 2,983 watts.

The short answer

Look for the continuous horsepower (CHP) figure, not peak horsepower. NordicTrack's 2026 buying guide gives these rough targets:

How you use itMotor size to look for
WalkingAbout 2.0 CHP
JoggingAbout 2.5 CHP
Running regularly3.0 CHP or more

Go higher if several people share the treadmill or you run most days.

Continuous horsepower vs peak

A treadmill motor has two power numbers:

  • Peak horsepower is the most the motor can put out for a moment, for example when the belt starts or the speed jumps.
  • Continuous horsepower is the output the motor can hold through a whole workout.

Peak is always the bigger number, which is why it shows up in ads. It tells you little about a 45-minute run. NordicTrack notes that CHP is an industry comparison figure measured on a dynamometer in a lab, and that a home treadmill motor does not actually run at its rated CHP during normal use. Treat it as a way to compare machines, not as the power you will use.

If a listing shows only "HP" without saying which kind, it may be peak. Compare CHP with CHP.

What horsepower treadmill do I need

Start from the table above, then adjust. NordicTrack lists the things that raise the load on a motor: a heavier user, faster speeds, steeper incline, longer sessions and more frequent use. A stronger motor handles that sustained load with less strain.

Of the 233 treadmills listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 36 state a motor of 3 HP or more and 21 state 2.5 to 2.9 HP. Not every listing says whether its figure is continuous or peak, so check the maker's spec sheet. Another 96 are walking pads, compact machines built for walking speeds.

How many watts does a treadmill use

Horsepower is a unit of power, so it converts straight to watts. NIST gives one horsepower as about 745.7 watts:

Motor ratingEquivalent in watts
2.0 CHP1,491 W
2.5 CHP1,864 W
3.0 CHP2,237 W
3.5 CHP2,610 W
4.0 CHP2,983 W

These are motor ratings, not a reading from your electric meter. The power a treadmill actually draws changes with speed, incline and the weight on the belt, and the motor does not sit at its rated output during an ordinary workout. For the real figure, read the electrical section of the owner's manual or measure the machine with a plug-in power meter.

Other specs worth checking

  • Belt size: NordicTrack suggests a 20-inch width for most users, a 55-inch length for walking and 58 to 60 inches or more for running.
  • Incline: standard home treadmills usually reach 10% to 12%, while incline trainers go steeper.
  • Top speed: most home treadmills top out around 10 to 12 mph.
  • Weight capacity: pick a listed capacity about 20% to 30% above your body weight.

How we count

Treadmill counts come from our listing data on October 26, 2026. Motor power and type are read from each store listing; treadmills that do not state them are left out of those counts. The watt figures are our arithmetic using the NIST conversion factor.
