Wallet Types and RFID Blocking, Explained
A bifold folds once and stays slimmer, a trifold folds twice and holds more, and RFID blocking stops cards being read, a risk Visa calls very unlikely.

The short answer
Choose a wallet by how much you carry. A bifold folds once and suits a few cards and some cash. A trifold folds twice and holds more, at the cost of bulk. RFID blocking is a lining that stops radio signals from reaching the cards inside. It does no harm, but for contactless bank cards the risk it guards against is small.
Bifold vs trifold wallet
| Bifold | Trifold | |
|---|---|---|
| Folds | Once, into two sections | Twice, into three sections |
| Size | More compact | Slightly larger |
| Capacity | Fewer card slots | Extra card slots, ID windows, note pockets |
| Suits | A light everyday carry | Cards, IDs, access cards and small items |
R.M.Williams sums up the difference as carrying capacity: a trifold adds a third panel with more room, while a bifold keeps things compact. Start by laying out what you actually carry each day, then pick the smallest style that fits it.
What RFID blocking means
RFID (radio frequency identification) lets a chip send data by radio when it is held near a reader. Contactless bank cards use this kind of chip, as do RFID-enabled U.S. passports, which BGR notes already include their own protection against identity theft. An RFID blocking wallet has a lining that blocks those signals, so the cards inside cannot be read until you take them out.
The worry it answers is skimming: someone with a hidden reader brushing past you and reading a card through your pocket.
Is RFID blocking necessary
For contactless payment cards, the case is weak:
- Range is short. Visa says a card must be within 1 to 2 inches of the reader, and a merchant has to start the transaction.
- The data changes. Each in-person Visa contactless payment sends a one-time code, so copied data is hard to reuse. Visa calls fraud from skimming very unlikely and limited in scope.
- You are covered. Visa's Zero Liability Policy applies to unauthorized use of a contactless card.
BGR reaches the same view: it describes RFID skimming as largely theoretical and says contactless fraud cases almost always involve a card that was physically stolen. It notes that crowded airports and train stations are where a thief could try it, so frequent travelers and commuters may still like the extra layer.
So an RFID blocking wallet is optional. If a wallet you like has it, there is no downside. If not, it is not a reason to pass on it. Paying with a phone wallet instead of a physical card cuts the exposure further.
How we count
Colors in the chart are read from each wallet's store listing on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026. Of the 312 wallets listed that day, the chart shows the colors with the most listings. On material, 52 listings are leather and 6 faux leather. Counts change as listings are added or removed. Browse the range from clothing, shoes and jewelry.
