Wet Cat Food Portions, Meals and Storage
Start with the feeding guide on the can, split it into meals by your cat's age, adjust to keep a healthy weight, and refrigerate or toss leftovers.

The short answer
There is no single right amount of wet food for every cat. The feeding guide printed on the can or pouch is the starting point, because each recipe has a different calorie count. Watch your cat's weight over a few weeks and adjust from there, and ask your vet for a target weight.
How much wet food to feed a cat
The Cornell Feline Health Center points out that label feeding instructions are based on the needs of an average cat. A cat that spends less energy than average, such as an indoor cat that sleeps most of the day, may need less than the label says. A very active cat may need more.
Keep these points in mind:
- Read the label for your cat's life stage. Cornell advises choosing a food whose label says it is complete and balanced for that stage, under AAFCO standards.
- Count the treats. Cornell's rule of thumb is to keep treats under 10 to 15 percent of daily calories.
- Mixing wet and dry: if you feed both, cut each portion so the total stays near the daily amount.
- Weigh your cat: weight gain or loss is the clearest sign the portion needs to change.
How often to feed
Cornell gives this general pattern:
| Age | Meals a day |
|---|---|
| Kittens up to 6 months | 3 |
| 6 months to 1 year | 2 |
| Adults (about 1 year and older) | 1 or 2 |
| Seniors (10 years and older) | Same as adults unless your vet says otherwise |
Divide the day's amount across those meals.
Why wet food is different
Canned cat food is mostly water. Cornell puts it at 70 to 80 percent water in one article and at least 75 percent in another, compared with 6 to 10 percent for dry food. That makes wet food a useful source of water. Cornell also notes that some cats find canned food very tasty and may eat too much if it is always available.
How long can wet cat food sit out
The FDA's pet food handling advice is to refrigerate or throw out unused or leftover canned and pouched food promptly, cover it tightly, and keep the refrigerator at 40 F or below. It does not give a safe number of hours at room temperature, so the safest habit is to serve a meal-sized portion and pick up what is left. Wash the bowl with soap and hot water after each use.
Pate vs chunks cat food
Pate is a smooth, finely ground loaf. Chunks, cuts or shreds are pieces of meat in gravy or jelly. Both can be complete and balanced; the label tells you. Texture is mostly a question of what your cat will eat, and some cats lick the gravy and leave the pieces. Cornell suggests rotating two or three foods so a cat does not refuse everything but one.
How we count
A read-only query of our listing data on October 26, 2026 found 148 wet pet foods under pet supplies on Wiki Shopping: 111 canned and 25 in pouches. The chart shows the most common stated container sizes; listings without a size are left out. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
