Microsoft Store Return Policy, Explained

Microsoft Store takes back most physical products bought online within 60 days of delivery, and 2026 holiday buys until January 31, 2027, with a free label.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the US Microsoft Store returns page, read on October 27, 2026. The official page is the one that applies; check it, and the return details on your product's own page, before you send anything back.

How long you have

Microsoft says you can return almost any physical product bought online from Microsoft Store for a full refund within 60 days of the day you receive it. The item has to be in like-new condition, in its original packaging, with every part, manual and document that came in the box.

PurchaseReturn window
Most physical products60 days from when you receive them
Eligible physical products bought October 1 to December 2, 2026Through January 31, 2027
Apps, games, subscriptions, movies, books and other digital goodsNot returnable, unless the law gives you a refund
Digital gift cards and service or subscription cardsNot returnable

The holiday window covers purchases from Microsoft Store online and Microsoft Experience Centers in select markets. On the day we read the page, one answer in its FAQ still described the previous year's holiday dates, while the note under the page gave the 2026 dates above. If your order falls near a cutoff, check the return details in your order history.

What is excluded

Microsoft lists these products as outside both the 60-day and the holiday return policy:

  • ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X
  • Surface Hub
  • HoloLens
  • Windows DevKit

There is also a limit of five product returns per eligible order. Items bought as a bundle cannot be returned one by one: the whole bundle has to go back together. Packaged software and packaged games must still be sealed and include all media and product keys.

Only for things you bought from Microsoft

The policy covers products bought from Microsoft Store only. Microsoft says it does not take back Microsoft products bought from another retailer, so a Surface or Xbox from another store goes back under that store's rules. For purchases made at a Microsoft Experience Center, Microsoft points you to your receipt.

How to start a return

  1. Check eligibility. Open the Order history page in your Microsoft account. If a Request a return button shows next to the product, it can be returned. Guest orders are handled through Guest Order Lookup.
  2. Print the label. Select Request a return and follow the steps; the prepaid shipping label costs you nothing.
  3. Ship it. Pack the product in its original packaging with all parts and documents.
  4. Wait for processing. Microsoft asks you to allow about a week once it has the item back.

If the product arrived damaged or defective, Microsoft sends you to a separate support article on returning items bought from Microsoft.

How you get your money back

Microsoft says refunds are generally processed within 3 to 5 business days after it receives the return and confirms it is eligible. The money goes back to the payment method you used, unless you choose Microsoft Store credit for the same amount instead.

The refund is the full amount you paid minus any original shipping fees, such as express shipping. The exception: if you return a product because you do not accept its license agreement or warranty, Microsoft also refunds the original shipping charge.
