Store programs change. This is a summary in our own words of REI's used gear questions and answers, its trade-in page and its membership page, read on October 27, 2026. The official pages and REI's used gear terms are the ones that apply; check them before you trade anything in.

What Re/Supply is

Re/Supply is REI's name for its used gear business. The items are gear that customers returned or traded in, and REI says each piece is hand selected and inspected before it goes back on sale. REI describes it as the year-round version of its old in-store Garage Sales.

Both buying and trading in used gear are member benefits. If you are not an REI Co-op Member, you cannot take part; membership is a one-time $30 fee.

Where you can buy used gear

  • The used gear section in most REI stores
  • REI's dedicated Re/Supply stores

REI's FAQ says it does not currently sell used gear online. Its pages do not agree on the Re/Supply store locations: the FAQ names Manhattan Beach, California and Clackamas, Oregon, while the membership page names Manhattan Beach and Conshohocken, Pennsylvania. Check REI's store finder before you go.

Used gear is different from REI Outlet, which is REI's online store for new closeouts and previous-year models.

How a trade-in works

  1. Check your item. Search REI's online trade-in catalog to see if your item is accepted and what credit it could earn. The color and style must match the catalog picture.
  2. Bring it to a store. Trade-ins are accepted at REI stores. Starting online first is optional.
  3. Store review. A staff member grades the item as excellent, lightly worn, moderately worn or well worn. REI decides the grade.
  4. Get paid. If the item is accepted, REI emails an REI e-gift card to the address on your membership.

You can trade in items you did not buy at REI, as long as they appear in the catalog.

How much you get

ItemCredit, as an REI gift card
Eligible gear and clothing10% to 40% of the original price
Eligible Co-op Cycles kids' bikesUp to 40% of the original price

REI says trade-in values are not guaranteed. The gift card works in REI stores, on REI.com and at REI Outlet.

What REI will not take

  • Items that need any repair, are heavily stained, or have broken or missing pieces
  • Next-to-skin clothing such as swimwear, undergarments and base layers
  • Altered or modified items, including clothing, footwear, bedding or upholstery with missing or altered care tags
  • Items with corporate logos
  • Oversized items such as kayaks and car racks

Shoes need all their standard parts, such as insoles, and must not show heavy wear like foot imprints inside.

Bike trade-ins

REI accepts a set list of Co-op Cycles REV kids' bike models, from the REV 12 Balance to the REV 24 family. The bike must be traded in by the original buyer within 3 years of purchase, be complete, and have working parts with no major structural damage. Cosmetic wear such as scratches or stickers is fine.

Returning used gear

Return rules for used gear differ from REI's regular policy. See our REI return policy article and REI's own return page before you buy.
