OLED vs QLED vs LED TV: How the Screens Differ

An OLED TV lights each pixel on its own for perfect black, while QLED and LED TVs are LCDs lit by a backlight; QLED adds a quantum dot layer for purer color.

The short answer

There are two ways a TV makes a picture:

  • OLED: every pixel makes its own light and can switch fully off. No backlight.
  • LCD: a backlight shines through a liquid crystal layer that lets more or less light through each pixel. "LED TV" means an LCD with an LED backlight. "QLED" is an LED TV with an added quantum dot layer. "Mini-LED" is an LCD with many very small backlight LEDs.

So the real choice is OLED or LCD, and then which kind of LCD.

Of the 1,062 TVs listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 195 are OLED, 181 Mini-LED, 167 QLED and 107 LED LCD.

What is QLED?

In a QLED TV, a blue LED backlight shines on a film of quantum dots: tiny crystals that turn blue light into pure red and green. The color filters in front then waste less light, which helps color purity and brightness. The quantum dots do not make light on their own; the backlight still does that, so a QLED is an LCD.

The name is a brand, not a standard. Samsung promotes it and lets Hisense and TCL use it; Sony calls its quantum dot TVs Triluminos. Wikipedia also notes disputes over whether some sets sold as quantum dot TVs contain quantum dots at all, so the spec sheet matters more than the badge.

OLED vs QLED

Black levelPixel off, true blackBacklight must be dimmed; can glow slightly
ContrastVery highDepends on local dimming
Burn-inMore susceptible to burn-in and agingNot a typical LCD issue

On any LCD, local dimming is what controls black level: the backlight is split into zones that dim behind dark parts of the picture. A Mini-LED backlight uses many small LEDs for this, and the number of dimming zones is a useful spec to compare.

Is OLED worth it?

OLED fits you if you watch movies in a dim room and want the deepest blacks and highest contrast. Its weak point is static images: logos, game bars and news tickers left on screen for long periods raise the risk of burn-in, and OLED materials age over time, blue fastest. Makers compensate, for example by making the blue subpixel larger.

A QLED or Mini-LED TV fits screens that show the same image for hours, such as a TV left on a news channel or used as a computer monitor. For a sunny room, compare the peak brightness each maker rates, whatever the panel type. On Wiki Shopping, 116 TVs are grouped as TVs for bright rooms.

Within OLED, two panel types exist: WOLED, which uses a white OLED layer with color filters and an extra white subpixel, and QD-OLED, which uses blue OLED light with quantum dot color conversion.

How we count

Display type counts are Wiki Shopping filter pages for TVs, read from our database on October 26, 2026. A TV counts when its store listing states the display type. TVs that do not state one are left out, and the counts change as listings are added or removed.
