What Size TV Fits Your Room?

One maker's rule of thumb puts viewing distance at about 1.2 times the screen size, so a 65-inch TV suits a seat about 78 inches from the screen.

The short answer

A TV's size is the diagonal of its screen, corner to corner, in inches. To pick a size, measure the distance from where you sit to where the TV will hang, then match the two.

Samsung's buying guide gives a simple rule: sit at about 1.2 times the screen size. That puts a 65-inch TV about 78 inches (roughly 6.5 feet) from your seat. Samsung bases the rule on the screen filling about 40 degrees of your field of view. It is one maker's guideline, not a standard every brand uses, so treat it as a starting point.

Size and distance at a glance

Samsung's guide lists these viewing distances for common sizes. The feet values are Samsung's own rounded figures.

TV sizeViewing distance in Samsung's guide
43 inchabout 4.5 feet (1.4 m)
50 inchabout 5 feet (1.5 m)
55 inchabout 5.5 feet (1.7 m)
65 inchabout 6.5 feet (2.0 m)
75 inchabout 7.5 feet (2.3 m)
85 inchabout 8.5 feet (2.6 m)

If your seat sits between two rows, either size can work. Sitting farther back than the table suggests makes the picture feel smaller; it does not harm anything.

Also measure the wall

The screen size leaves out the frame and the stand. Before you buy, check the TV's full width and height (often listed as the set size or dimensions) against the wall or cabinet, and check the stand's width if it will not be wall mounted.
