Wi-Fi 5, 6, 6E and 7: Router Standards, Explained

The Wi-Fi number names the standard's generation; Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 add the 6 GHz band, and Wi-Fi 7 is the most common among routers we list.

The short answer

"Wi-Fi 6" or "Wi-Fi 7" on a router names the generation of the Wi-Fi standard it supports. The numbers come from the Wi-Fi Alliance, the industry group that certifies Wi-Fi products. A higher number is a newer generation.

Of the 233 Wi-Fi routers listed on Wiki Shopping on October 23, 2026, Wi-Fi 7 is the most common standard (98 routers), followed by Wi-Fi 6 (71 routers).

The generations

What the Wi-Fi Alliance says about each generation, in short:

GenerationIntroducedRadio bandsWhat it added, per the Wi-Fi Alliance
Wi-Fi 52014Most products dual-band: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHzMulti-gigabit data rates and power-saving features
Wi-Fi 6 and 6E20182.4 GHz and 5 GHz; Wi-Fi 6E products add 6 GHzHigher capacity in crowded places, Wi-Fi in the 6 GHz band, and target wake time for better device battery life
Wi-Fi 720242.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz320 MHz channels in 6 GHz and multi-link operation across bands

The Wi-Fi Alliance says Wi-Fi 7's 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band give twice the throughput of Wi-Fi 6, and that multi-link operation spreads traffic across links for higher throughput and reliability.

Your devices set the limit

A device can only use the features of the Wi-Fi generation it supports, so a newer router does not upgrade an older laptop's Wi-Fi. Before you pay for a newer standard, check which Wi-Fi your phone, laptop and TV list in their own specs. Your internet plan also caps how fast pages load from outside your home, whatever the router supports.
