Smart Bassinets and Safe Sleep, Explained

A smart bassinet adds motion, sound or an app, but safe sleep rules stay the same; the AAP and CPSC say a flat, bare surface and back sleeping matter.

The short answer

A smart bassinet is a bassinet with electronics: it may rock or sway, play sounds, respond to crying or connect to a phone app. Those extras can be handy, but they do not change the safe sleep basics. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) agree on the core rules:

  • Put the baby down on the back for every nap and every night.
  • Use a firm, flat surface. The AAP says any surface inclined more than 10 degrees is not safe for sleep.
  • Keep the space bare: a fitted sheet only, with no pillows, blankets, bumpers, toys or positioners.

A bedside model attaches next to your bed, which fits the AAP's advice to room share: keep the baby's sleep area close to your bed, but not in it, for at least the first 6 months. The AAP advises against bed sharing in every case.

The federal bassinet standard

Every bassinet sold in the US, smart or not, falls under the CPSC's mandatory rule for bassinets and cradles (16 CFR Part 1218), which adopts the ASTM F2194 standard. The CPSC says that in the rest position (not rocking or swinging), the head-to-toe sleep surface must be at or below 10 degrees from horizontal. Products made or imported on or after February 21, 2026 must meet the newer ASTM F2194-25 version, and each bassinet must carry a permanent label with the maker or importer, a US address and phone number, the model and the month and year it was made.

Before buying, check that the product is sold as a bassinet for infant sleep, and look up recalls at the CPSC site.

What the rules say about smart claims

  • SIDS claims: the AAP says to avoid products that claim to lower the risk of SIDS, because there is no evidence behind those claims.
  • Monitors: the AAP says home heart and breathing monitors, including consumer wellness devices such as pulse oximetry monitors, have not been shown to reduce SIDS risk and should not be used for that purpose.
  • Incline and motion: the CPSC says inclined products over 10 degrees, such as rockers, gliders, soothers and swings, should never be used for sleep. If your baby falls asleep in one, move them to a flat sleep product.
  • Weighted items: both the AAP and the CPSC say not to use weighted blankets, sleepers or swaddles.

Using one safely

Read the maker's manual for its weight, age and development limits, and stop using the bassinet once your baby reaches any of them. Use only the mattress and fitted sheet made for that model. Treat the smart features as conveniences, not as a substitute for back sleeping, a bare bed and an adult who checks on the baby.

How we count

Features are read from each bassinet's store listing. A bassinet can count in more than one row, and bassinets that do not state a feature are left out of that row. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
