Stroller Types, From Full-Size to Compact

The short answer

Strollers trade weight and fold size against features. A full-size stroller rides smoothly, carries more and often works from birth with a bassinet or infant car seat. A compact or lightweight stroller folds small for car trunks and travel but usually expects a baby who can sit up. Travel systems bundle a stroller with a matching infant car seat, and jogging and all-terrain strollers add bigger wheels for rough paths.

Of the 680 strollers listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, the largest style groups are lightweight (182) and travel systems (175).

Full size vs compact stroller

Two makers' own specs show the gap:

Choose full-size if you walk a lot, want a newborn bassinet or plan a second child soon. Choose compact if you lift the stroller into a car often, take public transit or fly.

What age can a baby sit in a stroller without a car seat

It depends on the stroller seat, not on a single rule. Newborns need to lie flat or ride in an infant car seat or bassinet made for that stroller. The regular seat's minimum age is printed in the specs:

• UPPAbaby lists the Vista's toddler seat from 3 months without accessories, or from birth with its bassinet or infant insert.
• Evenflo lists a minimum age of 6 months for the Hummingbird and for its Pivot Xpand seat.

So the same 4-month-old can ride in one stroller's seat and not in another. On Wiki Shopping, 169 strollers list a bassinet or lie-flat seat, which lets a younger baby ride without a car seat.

Single to double stroller: worth it?

A convertible ("single to double") stroller makes sense when a second child is likely while the first still rides. Examples from the makers:

• The Vista can carry up to three children with its RumbleSeat and PiggyBack add-ons, bought separately.
• Evenflo's Pivot Xpand widens its frame to take a second toddler or infant seat, and the stroller holds up to 55 lb in all.

The trade-off is weight. In the table above, the Vista, which grows to three seats, weighs about three times as much as the compact Hummingbird. If a second child is not in your plans, a single stroller keeps things light. On Wiki Shopping, 147 listings are double strollers.

• Reversible seat: lets the baby face you or the world; 94 listings have one.
• Basket limit: check it in the specs; the Vista's basket, for example, holds up to 30 lb.
