Turntables: Belt vs Direct Drive and Preamps

A belt drive turntable turns the platter with a belt from an offset motor, a direct drive puts the motor under it, and a phono preamp boosts the signal.

The short answer

  • Belt drive: a motor sits off to the side and turns the platter's outer edge with a thin belt, like a pulley. The belt keeps motor vibration away from the record.
  • Direct drive: the motor sits right under the platter and turns it with no belt. It gets up to speed fast and holds speed when a hand touches the record, which is why DJs use it.
  • Phono preamp: the signal from a record needle is too weak and too bass shy for a normal input. A phono preamp boosts it and corrects the tone. Some turntables have one built in.

BGR's May 2026 guide says belt drive tables tend to have the lower noise floor, since the motor never touches the platter, while direct drive tables need extra parts to damp vibration. It also notes that a stretched belt shows up as unsteady pitch, and swapping it is not hard.

Direct drive goes back to 1969, when Matsushita (now Panasonic) released the SP-10, the first direct drive turntable on the market, according to Wikipedia. The Technics SL-1200 followed in 1972 and became the standard DJ deck: the motor's high torque keeps the record at speed while it is pushed back and forth, and there is no belt to snap.

Of the 164 turntables listed on Wiki Shopping on October 27, 2026, 65 are listed as belt drive and 15 as direct drive.

What a phono preamp does

Records are cut with the bass turned down and the treble turned up. That keeps grooves narrow and lowers surface noise. On playback, a phono stage (another name for the phono preamp) reverses this with the RIAA curve, a playback curve that several standards bodies adopted between 1953 and 1956, and lifts the signal to the line level that ordinary inputs expect.

The preamp can live in three places:

  1. Inside the turntable. Some modern turntables include one.
  2. In the amplifier or receiver. Most hi-fi amps and receivers of the 20th century had a phono stage built in.
  3. In a separate box between the turntable and an amp that only has line inputs.

Before buying a separate box, check whether the turntable lists a built-in preamp and whether your amp or receiver has a phono input.

How we count

Drive type, speeds, operation and features are read from each turntable's store listing on Wiki Shopping. Listings that do not state a spec are left out of that count, and one turntable can show several features. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
