Store policies change. Amazon's own help pages that we could read on October 26, 2026 do not set out protection plan terms. The plans offered next to many products on Amazon are run by Asurion, so this is a summary in our own words of Asurion's FAQ pages for Amazon customers, read that day. Your plan's own terms, sent in the confirmation email, are the ones that apply.
What kinds of plans there are
Asurion publishes separate FAQ pages for the plans sold on Amazon. They differ in what they cover and when cover starts:
| Plan type | Starts | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Plan with accident cover | The day you buy the plan | Drops, spills and cracked screens on portable products, and power surges; after the maker's warranty ends, breakdowns and normal wear |
| Extended plan without accident cover | When the maker's warranty ends | Mechanical and electrical failures and normal wear |
| Monthly phone plan | The day you buy | Drops, spills, cracked screens, heat, dust and humidity, power surges; breakdowns after the maker's warranty; up to 36 months while you keep paying |
| Asurion Complete Protect | When you subscribe | One monthly subscription for many eligible Amazon purchases in a household, with 24/7 tech support |
Asurion's examples of portable products include laptops, tablets, cameras, headphones and fitness trackers.
What the plans do not cover
The FAQ pages list loss, theft and intentional damage as excluded, along with scratches and dents on products that still work. Malfunctions the maker's warranty covers are left to the maker. For the phone plan, accessories not in the box, data loss and software issues are excluded, and the phone and plan must be bought on Amazon on the same day.
How long you are covered
The confirmation email states your coverage period; searching "Asurion" in Your Orders also shows the plan details.
Filing a claim
Asurion says there is no waiting period: a covered failure can be claimed any time after purchase. Claims can be filed online, and you will need the order receipt for the plan and the receipt for the product, both found in Your Orders. For the phone plan, Asurion says there is no cap on the number of claims, but the total paid for one phone is limited to its replacement cost, and a service fee may apply.
Canceling and refunds
For product plans, Asurion says you can cancel any time: within the first 30 days you get a full refund, and after that a prorated one. Within 30 days, find the plan in Your Orders and choose "Cancel Policy"; after 30 days, use "Contact Seller" and pick "Return Product" as the subject. The monthly phone plan also refunds in full within 30 days; after that, Asurion refunds the current month, and coverage ends on the cancellation date.
Is a plan worth it?
That depends on the product, the price of the plan and how the maker's warranty compares. A plan without accident cover only starts when the maker's warranty ends, so during that warranty it adds nothing; a plan with accident cover protects against drops and spills from the first day. Our guide on whether extended warranties are worth it walks through the questions to ask.
