Which products qualify

Target says most consumer electronics can get a plan: phones, TVs, projectors, wearables, game consoles, cameras and camcorders, laptops and tablets, computers and accessories, small appliances, clock radios and similar gear. Select baby products, bikes and furniture qualify too. Pre-owned electronics do not.

Phones are a special case. Target says it offers mobile insurance plans that cover things like accidental damage and cracked screens, but those must be bought together with the new device.

What the plan covers

According to Target, the plan pays for parts and labor to repair or replace the item during its term. For eligible electronics, it covers mechanical and electrical failures, normal wear and tear included, and power surges from the purchase date. Accidental damage from handling, such as drops, spills and cracked screens, is limited to headphones, cameras, video cameras, MP3 players, eReaders, laptops, tablets, netbooks and select portable electronics.

There is also a no lemon rule: if the same problem has needed two completed repairs and needs a third within 12 months, the product is replaced with a comparable one or settled with a Target GiftCard or check, capped at the original price before tax. Target notes that not every product gets every benefit, and that apart from enhanced coverage, protection starts when the manufacturer's warranty ends.

Buying, registering and claiming

  1. Buy: add the plan at checkout, or within 30 days bring the product receipt to Guest Services, buy on Target.com or call 1-877-927-7268.
  2. Confirmation: online buyers get an email within 30 minutes; store buyers get one within 5 minutes of registering. Keep it with your receipt.
  3. Claim: have the receipt, the model, serial or IMEI number and the device ready, then register and file at Allstate's service site.
  4. Gift or transfer: log in to your Allstate account and use the transfer option; the new owner gets an email.

Canceling a plan

Within the item's 30 or 90 day return window, you can return the plan to a store, or call Target Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869 if you bought it online. Target says you get a full refund minus the cost of any service already used. After that window, you cancel through Allstate's website.

AppleCare+ at Target

Apple products can carry AppleCare+ instead. Target says an AppleCare+ plan can be returned in store within 30 days for a full refund, even if you keep the product.
