Plan terms change. Walmart's own protection plan pages on walmart.com did not load for us (the site showed a robot check). This is a summary in our own words of the official Walmart Protection Plans site run by the plan administrator (walmartprotection.com forwards there) and a Walmart newsroom post, read on October 26, 2026. The Terms and Conditions that come with your plan are what apply.
Who runs Walmart protection plans?
Allstate. Walmart's newsroom said in September 2018 that Allstate powers every protection plan sold in Walmart stores and on Walmart.com since August 1, 2018. Today the program site says plans are administered and serviced by SquareTrade, an Allstate company. Plans bought before August 1, 2018 are still serviced by Asurion.
Standard and Accident plans
| Plan | Sold for | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Most products, such as TVs, home appliances, lawn and garden equipment and power tools | Mechanical and electrical failures from normal use, power surges and power supply failures |
| Accident | Select portable electronics, such as laptops, tablets, phones and headphones | Everything in Standard, plus drops, cracked screens, spills and liquid damage |
The program site lists plan categories for TVs, mobile phones, laptops, tablets, outdoor power equipment and patio, general merchandise, and jewelry and watches. For TVs, the Standard plan covers failures such as the screen, the remote, the speakers or the set not turning on, and TV plans include tech support at no extra cost. Accidental damage, intentional damage, loss and theft are not covered on a TV plan. Limitations and exclusions apply to every plan, so read the terms for your item.
How it fits with the manufacturer warranty
Most products come with a manufacturer warranty of 90 days to one year. The plan term starts on the day you buy it, but during the manufacturer warranty, covered problems go to the manufacturer first. So for a breakdown, the plan mostly matters once that warranty has run out.
How to file a claim
- Keep the receipt. A receipt is required for a claim. You do not have to register a plan, but you can save the receipt ahead of time by texting a photo of it to 202202 or by making an account on the program site.
- File online. The site calls online claims the fastest route. Have the receipt and the item with you.
- Repair first. Many claims are approved right away; others go to a specialist. The item is repaired, and if it cannot be, you get a replacement or are reimbursed for one.
Cancelling or transferring
Within the first 30 days, cancel by taking the plan receipt to the store where you bought it, or at Walmart.com/account for online orders. After 30 days, cancel on the program site's Manage Plan page. A plan can be transferred to someone else from that site.
Is a Walmart protection plan worth it?
The program pages do not publish prices, deductibles or plan lengths, and the full rules are in the Terms and Conditions linked from the program site. Compare the plan price with what a repair would cost after the manufacturer warranty ends, and with how hard the item is used. Our guide on whether extended warranties are worth it walks through the questions.
