Store hours change. This is a summary in our own words, read on October 26, 2026. One schedule comes from a store's own page; the rest come from news reports, because the other stores' pages we could read did not list Fourth of July hours. In 2026 the holiday fell on a Saturday, so treat this as a record of that day and confirm with your local store before you go next year.
What the stores themselves said
Home Depot's 2026 holiday hours page listed Independence Day, Saturday, July 4, as a short day: stores closed at 8 p.m. The page tells shoppers to check the store locator for local opening times, since hours vary by location.
What news reports listed
Costco, Walmart, Target and the grocery chains did not post 2026 July 4 hours on any of their pages we could read. Two news reports published on July 3, 2026, one from FOX 35 Orlando and one from CBS News (republished by News 9 in Oklahoma City), agreed on these stores. The facts here are as those reports gave them, not official policy:
| Store | July 4, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Costco | Closed |
| Walmart | Open, normal hours |
| Target | Open, normal hours |
| Trader Joe's | Open, closing early at 5 p.m. |
| Whole Foods | Open, closing early at 6 p.m. |
| Home Depot | Open, closing at 8 p.m. (from its own page) |
Both reports said July 3, the Friday before, was a normal day at the stores they covered. Stores that appeared in only one report, or with different hours in each, are left out.
Is Costco, Walmart or Target open on the 4th of July?
- Costco: both reports said Costco was closed on July 4, 2026. CBS cited a Costco spokesperson, and FOX 35 added that Costco kept normal hours on July 3. Costco's warehouse pages list upcoming holiday closures, so check yours in late June.
- Walmart: open on its normal store hours on July 4 in both reports.
- Target: open on its normal store hours on July 4 in both reports.
Mail, packages and banks
CBS reported that post offices closed and mail delivery stopped on Saturday, July 4, 2026, resuming on Monday, July 6, and that UPS halted pickup and delivery that day. Most bank branches closed on the holiday. If you are sending a package or need a branch, go before the holiday.
How to check July 4 hours next year
- Look for a holiday hours page from the store itself. Home Depot published its 2026 list at the end of March.
- Open your local store page a few days ahead; one-day changes show there.
- Plan grocery runs early in the day. Several chains closed early in 2026.
- Treat news lists, including the ones we cite, as a guide only. A single store can differ.
