Store hours change. This is a summary in our own words, read on October 26, 2026. One schedule comes from a store's own page; the rest come from news reports, because the other stores' pages we could read did not list Labor Day hours. Labor Day fell on Monday, September 7, in 2026, so treat this as a record of that day and confirm with your local store before you go next year.
What the stores themselves said
Home Depot's 2026 holiday hours page listed Labor Day as regular hours, so its stores kept their usual Monday times. The page points shoppers to the store locator for local hours, since times vary by location.
What news reports listed
Costco, Walmart, Target and the grocery chains did not post 2026 Labor Day hours on any of their pages we could read. Two news reports, one from FOX local stations (KTVU, published September 2, 2026) and one CNN story republished by ABC7 (dated September 4, 2026), agreed on these stores. The facts here are as those reports gave them, not official policy:
| Store | Labor Day 2026 |
|---|---|
| Costco | Closed |
| Walmart | Open |
| Target | Open |
| Kroger and its family of stores | Open |
| Trader Joe's | Open |
| Home Depot | Open (regular hours on its own page) |
| Aldi | Open, limited hours |
| Walgreens | Open; most pharmacies closed except 24-hour locations |
Both reports said hours can vary by location. Stores that appeared in only one report, or with different details in each, are left out.
Is Costco, Walmart or Target open on Labor Day?
- Costco: both reports listed Costco as closed on Labor Day 2026. Costco's warehouse pages show upcoming holiday closures for each store, so check yours in late August.
- Walmart: open in both reports. CNN said it operated normally.
- Target: open in both reports, operating normally according to CNN.
Pharmacies, mail and banks
If you need a prescription on Labor Day, call ahead: both reports said most Walgreens pharmacies were closed except 24-hour locations, and CNN added that CVS hours varied by location. The KTVU report listed post offices and bank branches as closed, and said most ATMs stayed available.
How to check Labor Day hours next year
- Look for a holiday hours page from the store itself. Home Depot published its 2026 list at the end of March.
- Open your local store page a few days ahead; one-day changes show there.
- Check the pharmacy line separately; it is the part of a store most likely to close on a holiday.
- Treat news lists, including the ones we cite, as a guide only. A single store can differ.
