Thanksgiving Store Hours 2026: What Is Open, Closed

Store hours change, and most chains post holiday hours only a few weeks ahead. This is a summary in our own words of what stores and news outlets said, read on October 26, 2026. Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26.
Confirmed for 2026
Only two large chains had posted a Thanksgiving 2026 plan on their own pages when we checked:
| Store | Thanksgiving, November 26, 2026 | Where it says so |
|---|---|---|
| Costco | Closed | Costco Holiday Savings page |
| The Home Depot | Closed | Home Depot holiday hours page |
Home Depot's page adds that stores open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, November 27, 2026. Costco's page does not list Black Friday hours; its warehouse locator shows each store's hours.
Is Target open on Thanksgiving?
Target did not publish a 2026 holiday schedule on the pages we read. In November 2021, Target said its stores would no longer open on Thanksgiving Day, making a pandemic-era closure permanent, as reported by PBS NewsHour and NBC News. News roundups for 2025 again listed Target as closed. Check your store page on target.com in the two weeks before the holiday.
Is Walmart open on Thanksgiving?
Walmart's store pages block automated readers, so we could not read a 2026 schedule from Walmart itself. Walmart's own newsroom shows it closed all U.S. stores on Thanksgiving Day in 2021, and said that was the second year in a row. Two news roundups for 2025, from 6abc and Hip2Save, both listed Walmart as closed on Thanksgiving. Those are last year's reports, not a 2026 promise, so confirm with Walmart before you go.
What other stores did in 2025
These are not 2026 hours. The store pages for 2026 could not be read or did not yet list hours, so this section is as reported by 6abc (November 26, 2025) and Hip2Save (November 19, 2025), which agree on these chains:
| Closed on Thanksgiving 2025 | Open on Thanksgiving 2025, often shorter hours |
|---|---|
| Best Buy, BJ's, Costco, Dick's Sporting Goods, Home Depot, Kohl's, Macy's, Target, Trader Joe's, Walmart | CVS (many stores), Kroger, Albertsons, Sprouts, Wegmans, Whole Foods |
The two disagree a little on Walgreens: 6abc listed it as closed, while Hip2Save said many Walgreens stores closed but most 24-hour stores stayed open. Hip2Save expects 2026 to look similar, but it also says no store had released Thanksgiving 2026 hours yet. Confirm with the store before you rely on this list.
How to check your store
- Open the store locator on the chain's own site and pick your store; holiday changes show there first.
- Look for a holiday hours page in the chain's newsroom, which is where Home Depot posted its schedule.
- Grocery and pharmacy hours can differ inside one store, so check the pharmacy line separately.
- Call the store if the page still shows regular hours close to the date.
Hours vary by store
Even a chain-wide plan has local exceptions. Home Depot's own holiday page tells shoppers to check the store locator because times vary by location, and both news roundups add that hours differ from store to store. Treat any list, including this one, as a starting point and the store's own page as the answer.
