Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Target's Refurbished and Pre-Owned shop page and its price match and return help pages, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check the product listing before you buy.

Does Target sell open box items?

Target's pages that we read describe refurbished and pre-owned products, not an open-box section like some electronics stores run. Where "open package" items come up in Target's help pages, it is to exclude them from price matching. If you want a lower price on a used or restored item at Target, the Refurbished and Pre-Owned department is the place to look.

The three kinds of used items

Target's Refurbished and Pre-Owned page sorts items into three groups:

TypeWhat Target says it isWarranty
Target Certified RefurbishedBrand-name items restored by partner companies and certified by TargetAt least 6 months
Manufacturer RefurbishedItems restored by the company that made themCheck the listing
Pre-OwnedLike-new items that were cleaned, inspected and re-boxedMany have one; check the listing

The page says the range runs from phones and laptops to game consoles and home appliances.

Warranties

Only Target Certified Refurbished comes with a stated minimum: a warranty of at least six months. For pre-owned items, Target says many come with warranties but the terms vary, so the product listing is where to find what you get. Read it before you buy, especially for phones and laptops.

Returns

Target's Refurbished and Pre-Owned page says most refurbished and pre-owned products can be returned and points to the standard return policy. That policy gives most items 90 days, but electronics and entertainment items get 30 days, and Apple and Beats products, mobile phones included, only 14 days. Since most refurbished items are electronics, the shorter windows are the ones to plan for.

Other return rules that can apply to used tech:

  • Opened video games and software can only be exchanged for the same title.
  • Phones bought with a carrier contract may carry early termination fees and must go back in store with a Target Tech Rep.
  • Target says a restocking charge of up to $35 may apply to opened phones.

Price matching does not cover them

Target's price match policy lists damaged, used, open package, refurbished and pre-owned items among its exclusions, along with clearance and closeout. So if a refurbished laptop drops in price after you buy it, Target's price match is not the route to get the difference back.

Tips before you buy

  • Check which of the three types the listing says, since the warranty depends on it.
  • Look for who sells it. Items from Target Plus partners usually have a 30-day, refund-only return window.
  • Compare the price with the same model new; a sale on the new one can close the gap.
