Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the Returns page and the two return policy pages (in-store and online purchases) on tjmaxx.com, read on October 27, 2026. Those pages are the ones that apply; check them before you return anything.

How long you have

TJ Maxx sets different windows for store and online purchases:

PurchaseRefund to original paymentAfter that
Bought in a store, with the register receiptWithin 30 days of purchaseMerchandise credit
Bought on tjmaxx.comWithin 40 days of the order dateMerchandise credit

The online window can differ if the shipping confirmation email says so, and some online items are marked final sale or carry extra return limits in the item details. TJ Maxx takes back most merchandise that is unwashed, unused and still tagged. Used, worn or unsellable items are refused, and swimwear and intimate apparel need their tickets attached.

Holiday 2026 returns

TJ Maxx has posted an extended window for this season:

Holiday purchaseBought betweenReturn by
In a storeOctober 4 and December 24, 2026January 25, 2027
OnlineOctober 4 and December 24, 2026February 4, 2027

Purchases from December 26, 2026 fall under the normal policy. Gift returns with a receipt get store credit.

Returning without a receipt

Returns past the window, with a gift receipt or with no receipt get merchandise credit instead of a refund. For a no-receipt return, TJ Maxx asks for a valid government-issued photo ID, your name, address and signature, and the same ID is needed to spend the credit: the name must match. TJ Maxx also says its refund verification system can limit or decline returns to reduce fraud.

Online orders: by mail or in store

  • In store, free. Bring the item with the shipping confirmation email (printed or on your phone) or the order barcode or number, plus the plastic packaging it came in.
  • By mail, $11.99. Start the return in the online returns portal; the fee is taken from your refund, and each package is charged separately, so send items together. Mail returns that reach the warehouse more than 40 days after the order get digital merchandise credit.

Mail refunds post within 10 to 14 business days after the warehouse receives the return, in most cases. In-store refunds are made on the spot, though a bank can take a few days to post them.

How you get your money back

  • PayPal orders returned in a store get merchandise credit; by mail, the refund goes back to PayPal minus the fee.
  • Items paid partly or fully with a TJ Maxx gift card, or with a Rewards Certificate, come back as merchandise credit.
  • Shipping charges and oversized item surcharges are not refunded.

What cannot go back to a store

TJ Maxx lists these online purchases as not eligible for in-store return: items over $1000, handbags and footwear over $499.99, long occasion gowns and luggage sets. Opened or tampered beauty items and gift cards cannot be returned at all. Online orders cannot be exchanged, and store purchases cannot be returned online.

TJ Maxx purchases go back only to TJ Maxx, not to Marshalls or its other sister brands.
