Gaming Headsets: Wired vs Wireless and Mic Types

A wired headset needs no charging, a wireless one runs on a battery over a USB receiver or Bluetooth, and the mic style decides how clearly others hear you.

The short answer

A headset is a pair of headphones with a microphone attached. For gaming, two choices matter most:

  • Wired or wireless. Wired headsets plug in and never need charging. Wireless headsets free you from the cable but run on a battery.
  • Microphone style. A boom mic on an arm sits near your mouth; a built-in mic sits in the ear cup or the cable.

On Wiki Shopping, 260 headsets are listed as wireless and 163 as wired.

Wired headsets: 3.5 mm or USB

Wired headsets connect in one of two ways:

  • 3.5 mm jack. The headset sends plain analog sound, and the computer, console controller or phone turns it into digital audio. Older PC headsets use two 3.5 mm plugs, one for the headphones and one for the mic; newer ones combine both in a single plug. Phones and some devices wire that single plug in slightly different pin orders, so a mic may not work on every device.
  • USB. The headset or its inline control box does the audio conversion itself, so sound does not depend on the computer's audio chip.

On Wiki Shopping, 141 headsets list a USB connection and 107 a 3.5 mm jack.

Wireless headsets: USB receiver or Bluetooth

Wireless gaming headsets usually link in one of two ways:

  • A USB receiver. A small dongle plugs into the PC or console and talks to the headset over its own radio link. Logitech calls its version LIGHTSPEED and describes it as its low-latency wireless.
  • Bluetooth. Pairs with phones, tablets and many computers without a dongle.

Some headsets offer both, plus a cable. Logitech's PRO X 2 LIGHTSPEED, for example, lists LIGHTSPEED wireless, Bluetooth and a 3.5 mm wired connection, up to 50 hours per charge and up to 30 meters of wireless range. Check which links a headset supports on your console before buying: 187 headsets on Wiki Shopping are listed for PlayStation.

Microphone types

  • Boom mic. On an arm in front of your mouth. Some detach, like the one on the PRO X 2. 176 headsets on Wiki Shopping list a boom mic.
  • Built-in mic. Hidden in the ear cup or cable. Neater, but farther from your mouth than a boom. 56 headsets list a built-in mic.
  • Noise-cancelling mic. Picks up sound mostly from close to the speaker and rejects much of the noise around, such as a keyboard or a fan. An omnidirectional mic hears every direction, background included. 265 headsets list a noise-cancelling mic.

One ear or two

Gaming headsets cover both ears for stereo sound. Single-ear headsets leave one ear free to hear the room, which suits calls and office work. On Wiki Shopping, 136 headsets list both ears and 62 a single ear.

How we count

Connection, microphone, battery life, ear coverage and platform are read from each headset's store listing. Headsets that do not state a value are left out of that count, and a headset that offers several connections can appear in more than one row. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
