Racing Wheels: Gear vs Belt vs Direct Drive

A gear driven wheel is the cheapest, a belt driven wheel is smoother, and a direct drive wheel bolts the rim to a large motor for the strongest feedback.

The short answer

A force feedback racing wheel uses a motor to push back on your hands, so you feel the car grip, slide and hit curbs. What differs is how the motor's force reaches the rim:

  • Gear driven: the motor turns the wheel shaft through a set of cogs. Cheapest and simplest.
  • Belt driven: a belt carries the force from the motor to the shaft. Smoother, with more force and detail than gears.
  • Direct drive: the rim mounts straight on the motor shaft, with nothing in between. The strongest and most detailed, and the most expensive.

Below these sit wheels with only vibration (rumble), which shake but do not steer against you.

How each design works

Gear driven

Fanatec, which makes wheel bases of all kinds, describes gear drive as low cost, cheap to maintain and easy to set up, but weaker and less suited to long, intense sessions. Logitech's G29 and G920 use two motors with helical gears, which Logitech compares to the gears in a car transmission, and list a 2.3 Nm racing system. The G923 lists the same 2.3 Nm figure with Logitech's TRUEFORCE feedback.

Belt driven

A belt replaces the meshing cogs. Fanatec says this gives more torque than gears and slightly more detail, but belts can lose tension or wear, and the detail in the feedback fades as they do. Thrustmaster's T300RS GT Edition is a typical example: a dual belt system with a brushless motor of nearly 25 watts and 1080 degrees of force feedback.

Direct drive

With no gears or belts, none of the motor's force is lost along the way. Fanatec lists the strongest forces and the most detail, plus long sessions without a drop in quality. The trade offs are price, more costly servicing when it is needed, and more settings to learn. Logitech's PRO Racing Wheel, for example, is an 11 Nm direct drive base.

Nm (newton meters) is the twisting force the base can put on the rim. A higher figure lets the wheel recreate heavy forces, but only matters if your mount can hold it.

What is listed on Wiki Shopping

Of the 85 racing wheels listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 51 state a feedback type: 23 are direct drive, 17 are other force feedback wheels, and 11 are vibration only. 64 come with pedals.

Which one fits you

  • First wheel, casual racing, a desk clamp: a gear or belt wheel with pedals in the box.
  • Regular sim racing: a belt wheel is smoother over long sessions.
  • Serious sim racing with a rig or cockpit: direct drive gives the most feel, but plan for a rigid mount and check that the base, rim and pedals work with your console.

Always check platform support. Logitech, for example, sells the G29 for PlayStation and PC and the G920 for Xbox and PC.

How we count

Feedback type and included pedals are read from each wheel's store listing. Wheels that do not state a feedback type are left out of that count. Each wheel sits in one feedback group. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
