Refurbished Grades and Labels, Explained
Refurbished grades describe looks, not how a device works; each seller sets its own names, so compare the wording, battery rule, warranty and return window.

The short answer
A refurbished device has been used or returned, then checked, repaired where needed and cleaned before it is sold again. The grade on the listing mostly tells you how it looks. Back Market, for example, says its devices are always fully working whatever the grade. Each program sets its own grade names, so the same word can mean different things at different sellers.
Four things matter more than the grade name:
- What the grade says about scratches, dents and the screen.
- Whether the battery has a minimum health.
- How long the included warranty or guarantee lasts.
- How many days you have to return it.
Grades at four sellers

eBay says its warranty is serviced by Allstate and starts on the purchase date, and that you can return an item that does not match its grade.
Refurbished, open-box and pre-owned
Stores often sell these side by side, and they are not the same. Best Buy's outlet guide draws the line this way:
- Open-box: a returned or display item, tested or inspected, then graded Excellent (looks new, with all original parts), Good (minor to moderate cosmetic wear, no dents, chips, cracks or deep scratches) or Fair (works, with more visible wear).
- Refurbished: repaired and restored to a like-new state, which may leave minor scratches, by Best Buy, the maker or a third party.
- Pre-owned: used, inspected and cleaned, and may be missing parts, accessories or the original box.
Buying a refurbished laptop
- Read the grade wording, not just the grade name.
- Check the battery rule. Back Market's 80 percent floor is the only stated battery minimum in the tables above.
- Confirm the exact model, processor, memory and storage against the maker's spec sheet.
- Note the warranty start date and the last day to return.
- Compare the price with the same model new, since a sale on new laptops can close the gap.
