The short answer

The numbers on a soundbar, such as 2.1, 5.1 or 5.1.2, count its sound channels:

  • First number: ear-level channels, the ones that send sound toward you (left, right, center and surround).
  • Second number: the subwoofer channel for deep bass. A 0 means no subwoofer.
  • Third number, if there is one: height channels. On a soundbar these are usually speakers that fire upward and bounce sound off the ceiling, which is how many soundbars play the overhead effects in Dolby Atmos.

Dolby gives the example of 5.1.2: five ear-level speakers, one subwoofer and two height speakers.

The common layouts

LayoutWhat it meansSoundbars on Wiki Shopping
2.0Left and right, no subwoofer19
2.1Left and right plus a subwoofer21
3.1Left, center and right plus a subwoofer28
5.1Left, center, right, two surrounds, plus a subwoofer29
7.1 and upTwo or more extra ear-level channels30

The meanings follow the numbering rule Dolby, Samsung and Sonos describe. Sonos explains that a soundbar can handle the left, center and right front channels in one unit, and that a 5.1 system adds two rear channels and a subwoofer. In a 5.1.2 soundbar, Samsung lists the five ear-level channels as left, right, center and two side channels.

What each channel adds

  • Subwoofer (the .1): Sonos says it handles the low frequencies, such as explosions and deep voices, so the other speakers can focus on the midrange. On Wiki Shopping, 100 soundbars come with a separate subwoofer and 10 have one built in.
  • Surround channels: Sonos describes surround speakers as sitting beside or behind the seats and adding the ambient sound that puts you in the scene. 36 soundbars on Wiki Shopping list rear speakers.
  • Height channels: Dolby explains that height speakers either hang in the ceiling or fire upward and reflect sound down from the ceiling. 93 soundbars on Wiki Shopping list Dolby Atmos.

2.1 vs 5.1 vs Dolby Atmos

  • 2.1: left and right channels plus a subwoofer for the bass.
  • 3.1 and 5.1: a center channel adds a dedicated front channel, and 5.1 adds surround channels, either from the bar itself or from rear speakers.
  • Dolby Atmos (x.x.2 and up): adds height. Check the third number: it counts the height channels, as in 5.1.2 or 7.1.4.

Samsung adds that the direction a channel sounds from can differ from how the diagram shows it, so the numbers describe channels, not exact speaker positions.

Other things to check

  • Connection: 50 soundbars on Wiki Shopping list HDMI ARC or eARC, and 78 list Bluetooth.
  • Wireless subwoofer: 53 list one, which saves running a cable across the room.
  • Room calibration: Dolby notes many soundbars have a mode that listens to the room and adjusts the sound.

How we count

Channel layout, subwoofer type and features are read from each soundbar's store listing. Of the 201 soundbars listed on October 26, 2026, 127 state a channel layout; the rest are left out of that count. Counts change as listings are added or removed.
