Amazon Holiday Return Policy, Explained
Amazon has not posted a 2026 holiday window on its return page yet; last season, most items bought November 1 to December 31 could go back until January 31.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Amazon's return policy page and Gift Returns page, read on October 26, 2026, and of Amazon's own article on the 2025 holiday season. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them again in November, when stores usually post holiday rules.
Where things stand for 2026
On October 26, 2026, Amazon's return policy page still showed only its standard rule: most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery, in original or unused condition. It did not yet list an extended window for the 2026 holiday season. We do not give 2026 dates until Amazon publishes them on a page we can read.
What Amazon did last season
For the 2025 holiday season, Amazon's own news site said most items bought between November 1 and December 31, 2025 could be returned until January 31, 2026. Apple-branded products bought in that period had a shorter window, with returns accepted through January 15, 2026.
| 2025 season | Bought | Return by |
|---|---|---|
| Most items | November 1 to December 31, 2025 | January 31, 2026 |
| Apple-branded products | November 1 to December 31, 2025 | January 15, 2026 |
That window has ended. It shows the pattern Amazon used, not a promise for this year.
What stays the same in any season
- Check the item first. Amazon says each product page shows its return eligibility before you order, and Your Orders shows it after.
- Exceptions still apply. Some categories have shorter or longer windows, and some items, such as perishables, customized products and "Final Sale" items, cannot be returned. The full list is in our Amazon return policy summary.
- Late returns can cost money. Amazon's page lists a fee of 20% of the item price in the first 30 days after the "return by" date and the full price after that.
- Free drop-off. Amazon says most items can be returned free at more than 8,000 locations, usually within 5 miles, and most returns need no box or label.
Returning a gift
Gift recipients do not need the giver's account. Amazon's Gift Returns page asks for the 17-digit order number on the packing slip or the digital gift receipt. A few points from that page:
- The recipient's refund comes as an Amazon.com Gift Card once Amazon receives the item; recipients do not get instant refunds.
- The buyer can choose a gift card balance or the original payment method.
- A gift worth more than $2,000 can only be refunded to the buyer's original payment method.
- There are no direct exchanges for recipients: return the gift and place a new order.
- Wipe personal data from laptops, cameras and other devices before sending them back.
Tips for holiday shoppers
- Mark gift orders as gifts at checkout: Amazon's Gift Returns Center is for items marked as a gift at the time of purchase.
- Keep packing slips until after the holidays; the order number is on them.
- For Apple products, plan on a shorter window than other items, as last season showed.
- Compare other stores on our holiday return windows page.
