Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Target's holiday return help page and its return policy, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you return a gift.

The short version

Target gives extra return time on some holiday purchases made from November 1 through December 24, 2026. For those items, the return window does not start on the day you buy. It starts on December 26, 2026, and then the normal length of the window for that kind of item applies.

Why it matters for electronics

Outside the holiday period, electronics and entertainment items have a 30-day window and Apple and Beats products only 14 days. A TV bought on November 2 would normally have to go back by early December. Under the holiday rule, the same TV can go back until January 24, 2027, which leaves time for the person who got it as a gift.

What the extension does not change

Most other items sold by Target already have a 90-day window for unopened items in new condition, and Target Owned Brands can go back for up to a year with a receipt. Those rules stay as they are; the holiday page only names the three groups in the table.

A few other rules still apply at Christmas:

  • Opened music, movies, video games and software can only be exchanged for the same title.
  • Trading cards, personalized items, digital downloads and gift cards are final sale.
  • Target says holiday and limited-time collections may carry modified return rules, so check the receipt or item page.
  • Seasonal holiday decor sold by Target Plus partners is left out of the Target Plus extension.

Target Circle Card and Circle 360

Target Circle Card holders and Target Circle 360 members get an extra 30 days to return nearly everything bought with the card. The holiday page points to the main return policy for how this extra time works with the holiday windows, so read that page before counting on the longer date.

Returning a holiday gift

A gift returned to a store with a gift receipt or packing slip is refunded as a Target GiftCard. Gifts bought on Target.com can also go back by mail with the gift receipt or packing slip; Target asks you to call Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869 to set that up. Without the original receipt or return barcode, a store return may be refunded on a merchandise return card, and Target says returns without a receipt may be limited.
