Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Best Buy's Holiday FAQs page and its Return and Exchange Policy page, both read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you buy a gift or bring one back.
The short version
On October 26, 2026, Best Buy's Holiday FAQs page still described the 2025 season. It had not announced an extended return window for 2026 purchases. Until it does, a gift bought now falls under the standard return windows in the table below, and the clock starts on the day the product is received.
Best Buy has offered a holiday extension before, so it is worth checking the Holiday FAQs page again in November before you count on a longer date.
What last season looked like
The Holiday FAQs page we read is dated November 30, 2025. For that season, Best Buy said purchases made from October 31 through December 31, 2025, could be returned until January 15, 2026. These dates are for the 2025 season only. They are shown here so you know what kind of rule to look for, not as the 2026 dates.
The same page left these items out of the extended period:
- Items bought with a third-party contract, such as activatable devices: phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots and cellular wearables.
- AppleCare+ and similar plans.
- Holiday products such as artificial trees, lights and decorations.
It also said restocking fees, non-returnable products and the rest of the regular return policy still applied.
Standard windows that apply now
| Product | Standard | My Best Buy Plus and Total members |
|---|---|---|
| Most products | 15 days | 60 days |
| Activatable devices | 14 days | 14 days |
| Verizon devices that can be activated | 30 days | 30 days |
| Halloween and Christmas decorations | 15 days | 15 days |
The longer member window does not cover products from Marketplace sellers. Restocking fees and the full list of items that cannot be returned are in our Best Buy return policy summary.
Returning a gift
Best Buy's return policy treats gifts this way:
- Best Buy purchase, returned in a store: you get store credit for the price paid.
- Best Buy purchase, returned by mail: the refund goes to the person who bought the gift, and Best Buy notifies them by email.
- Marketplace seller purchase: the refund also goes to the buyer, with an email notice.
Without proof of purchase, Best Buy says it may ask for an email address and give store credit, and it may limit or deny the return. State sales taxes and fees are not refunded on those returns.
Refunds after the holidays
Best Buy's Holiday FAQs page warns that refunds can take longer than usual because of the volume of returns after the holidays. It adds that the time for a refund to show up depends on your card company or bank, and that refund checks sent by mail can be held up by carrier delays.
How to check the 2026 rule
- Open Best Buy's Holiday FAQs page and look for the season year in the return answer.
- Compare it with the Return and Exchange Policy for your product type.
- Keep the receipt or order email, since proof of purchase decides how a refund is paid.
