Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Harbor Freight's return pages, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you return anything.

Receipts and ID

Harbor Freight says proof of purchase is required for every return. For a store purchase, bring the item and a copy of your receipt. For an online order returned to a store, bring the item and the original packing slip. The return pages we read describe no option for returns without proof of purchase.

Store returns also need a valid government-issued photo ID or other identifying information, and a manager can refuse any return, even one with a receipt.

Used tools and the restocking fee

Some items carry a restocking fee. In stores they are marked "Subject to Restock Fee" on the price tag; online, the product page says so, and the receipt shows it too. Harbor Freight does not list the fee amount on its page, and in some states the fee is taxed.

The fee is waived when:

  • the item is unopened and in new condition,
  • you exchange it for an upgraded product in the same category,
  • it is replaced under the manufacturer's warranty, or
  • it is replaced under an Extended Service Protection plan.

Items with special rules

  • Pumps, sprayers and drain cleaners: cannot be returned to a store or by mail once opened, for safety reasons. Within 90 days of purchase, Harbor Freight sends you to a warranty return form instead. After 90 days, only an Extended Service Protection plan covers a failure.
  • Gas-powered items: drain the fuel and engine oil before a store return.
  • Abrasive media and some other items: returnable in store only if unopened, even when bought online.
  • Flammable or hazardous items: cannot be mailed back, even when drained.
  • Online exclusives: products marked "ONLINE EXCLUSIVE" cannot be returned to a store.

How to return an item

  1. In a store. Take the item and your receipt or packing slip to any Harbor Freight store.
  2. By mail. Call Customer Support at 1-800-444-3353 first, with your order number and the reason for the return. Harbor Freight says items sent back without authorization may not be refunded. Shipping and handling charges are not refunded.

Getting your money back

Refunds usually go back to the original payment method and can take up to 10 business days to post. Purchases paid with a gift card are refunded to a new gift card.
