IKEA Return Policy, Explained
IKEA takes back new, unopened products within 365 days and opened products within 180 days, with proof of purchase, for a full refund.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the IKEA US return policy and its How to Return page, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you return anything.
How long you have
IKEA splits its window by the state of the product. Both windows need proof of purchase, and both end in a full refund.
| Product | Return window |
|---|---|
| New and unopened | 365 days |
| Opened | 180 days |
| Mattress | One exchange for another mattress within 90 days |
Refunds go back to the form of payment you used to buy. IKEA says only the net purchase price shown on the receipt is refunded.
Assembled furniture
The policy page has no separate rule for assembled furniture. It treats anything that is no longer unopened as an opened product, so the 180-day window applies. The limit that matters more is condition: IKEA says it cannot refund or exchange items that have been modified from their original form, or that come back dirty, stained or damaged. Keep all the parts and hardware, and bring the item back clean.
Returns without a receipt
IKEA's policy page says you must have your receipt and a valid government-issued photo ID to return or exchange a product. It does not describe a no-receipt option. An online order confirmation counts for exchanges, according to the How to Return page. IKEA also says it keeps information from your ID in a company-wide database used only to authorize returns.
What IKEA does not take back
- Plants
- Cut fabric
- Custom countertops
- As-is products
If you bought an item as part of a promotion and keep the promotional item, IKEA deducts its value from your refund.
How to return an item
- In a store. Use the Exchanges & returns entrance, follow the signs to the desk and sign up to join the line. You can also start the return online first. This works for both store and online purchases.
- Pickup from home. For online orders, or items delivered from a store, contact the IKEA Customer Support Center to schedule a pickup. IKEA says pickup service varies by market; where it is offered, put the product on a covered porch, in the garage or at your doorstep.
- FedEx for small items. For a small item recently bought in a store, the Customer Support Center can set up a return at any of more than 50,000 FedEx drop-off locations.
IKEA Planning Studio and IKEA Pick Up Point locations do not accept returns.
Exchanges
Any IKEA store handles exchanges. Bring the item, a photo ID, the receipt or online order confirmation, and the card you paid with.
Damaged or missing parts
If one part of a product arrives damaged, IKEA says it may be able to ship a replacement part from a store. The quickest route it suggests is a store visit with the part and your receipt or order confirmation; otherwise call the IKEA US Customer Support Center at 1-888-888-4532.
