Macy's Return Policy, Explained
Most Macy's items can go back within 30 days; mail returns cost $9.99 unless you are a Star Rewards member, as recent consumer guides report.

Macy's own help pages could not be read when we checked on October 26, 2026: macys.com refused every request with an access denied page. The facts below are as reported by recent consumer finance and news sources, listed at the end, and we only kept the points on which at least two of them agree. Confirm the rules with Macy's (in a store, in the app or on macys.com) before you send anything back.

GOBankingRates and SuperMoney both give 30 days for most items and 14 days for Apple products. Both also treat furniture and mattresses as a special case, but they describe the rules differently, so ask Macy's before you buy a large item you may want to return.
What you cannot return
The same two guides agree that these are not returnable:
- Final sale merchandise, including Last Act clearance items
- Personalized or altered items
- Gift cards
Returning an online order
Online orders can go back by mail or to a Macy's store, both guides say.
- In a store: free. Bring the item to the customer service area with your receipt or packing slip if you have it.
- By mail: Macy's gives a return label, but customers who are not Star Rewards members pay $9.99, taken out of the refund. Star Rewards members get free return shipping.
The $9.99 fee for non-members appears in GOBankingRates, SuperMoney, a TheStreet roundup on Yahoo Finance and a Fox roundup of stores that charge for mailed returns. Joining Star Rewards at its free tier, or returning in person, avoids it. One shopping site we read, ShopSavvy, describes free labels for most orders instead, which is one more reason to check the label terms in your Macy's account before you print it.
Returns without a receipt
GOBankingRates says a store can often find the purchase with the card you paid with, your Macy's account or your order number. If nothing turns up, both GOBankingRates and SuperMoney say you get store credit at the item's lowest selling price. They disagree on how far back that lowest price is measured, so expect less than you paid.
Holiday returns
For the 2025 season, Macy's let shoppers return purchases made from October 6 to December 31, 2025 until January 31, 2026, according to TheStreet (via Yahoo Finance) and WJAR Turn to 10. Reports of the 2026 holiday window did not agree on the start date when we checked, so look up the current dates with Macy's before you count on a late return.
