Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of The Home Depot's Return Policy page, read on October 26, 2026. The official page is the one that applies; check it before you return anything.

How long you have

ProductReturn window
Most merchandise90 days
Furniture, TVs and computers, framing and roofing compressors, paint sprayers, some gas-powered outdoor equipment30 days
Halloween and holiday decor30 days
Dehumidifiers, gas pressure washers, window and portable air conditioners, gas generators7 days
Pumps, portable evaporative units, portable heaters7 days
Major appliances48 hours after delivery

Every window needs proof of purchase. Items on the 30-day and 7-day lists must be unused, and most of them must be in the original factory-sealed packaging. The 365-day window applies when you paid with The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, the Pro Xtra Credit Card or a Home Depot Commercial Account, except for the shorter-window items above and the listed exceptions.

Home Depot also says it may decline returns of products the customer damaged, or to prevent fraud or abuse.

Returning tools

Most hand and power tools fall under the standard 90 days. The shorter windows hit gas-powered gear: trimmers, blowers, chain saws, mowers, outdoor augers, tillers, chippers and log splitters get 30 days, unused and factory sealed, as do framing and roofing compressors and paint sprayers. Gas pressure washers and gas generators get only 7 days. Whole-house and stationary generators cannot be returned at all.

Anything that uses flammable liquids or gases, such as mowers and leaf blowers, cannot be mailed back, even when drained. Take it to a store.

Returns without a receipt

Home Depot asks for a valid driver's license or government-issued photo ID for returns without a receipt. It uses a third-party refund verification system, and every return needs its approval. A return without valid proof of purchase may be refunded as store credit at the lowest advertised price. Online orders can be looked up in a store by credit card, order number or email.

What Home Depot does not take back

  • Gift cards and store credit
  • Whole-house and stationary generators, and utility trailers
  • Cut flowers and floral arrangements
  • Labor, delivery and installation services
  • Product samples and tinted paint
  • Custom and made-to-order products, including custom thresholds

Special orders may carry a 15% restocking fee and must go back to the store that sold them.

Plants

Most plants can be returned within 90 days. Perennials, trees, roses and shrubs carry a 1-year guarantee and can be returned after 90 days for store credit.

How to return an item

  1. In a store (free). Any Home Depot store takes returns, online orders included, except major appliances. Bring the receipt or shipping confirmation email, the card you paid with and a valid ID.
  2. By mail. Start the return from your order details online, by chat, at 1-800-430-3376, or by texting "Support" to 38698. Eligible orders get an emailed label for a UPS Access Point drop-off.
  3. Major appliances. Inspect them at delivery, and report damage or defects to Customer Solutions at 1-800-455-3869 within 48 hours (weekends excluded).

When the refund arrives

Store returns are processed right away. For mailed returns, Home Depot says processing typically takes about 7 business days after it receives the item, and your bank may take up to 10 more business days.
