Three ways to get rid of old tech
| Option | What it costs | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Store drop-off recycling | Free for most items; $29.99 per item for most TVs and monitors | Nothing back, the item is recycled |
| Haul-away with a new delivery | $49.99 | A TV or major appliance taken from your home |
| Standalone haul-away | $199.99 | Up to 2 large items plus unlimited select small items |
| Trade-in | Free | A Best Buy e-Gift Card or credit toward a purchase |
Recycling in a store
Best Buy says it recycles products no matter where you bought them. Most stores take up to ten items per household per day, with tighter limits in some categories, such as two TVs and two monitors a day. The service is for households only; products from businesses and hazardous items are refused.
Free: phones, laptops (up to five a day), desktops, tablets, printers, ink and toner, cables, chargers, headphones, speakers, cameras, drones, game consoles, routers, smart watches, vacuums, fans and many other small electronics. Insignia and Dynex TVs and monitors 50 inches and smaller are free too.
$29.99 each: other flat-panel TVs and monitors 50 inches and smaller, tube TVs 31 inches and smaller, and portable TVs. Larger screens need a haul-away. Best Buy lists no drop-off fee in California, Connecticut and Hawaii, and gives a $30 gift card back for the fee in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Not taken in store: most small kitchen appliances (air fryers, blenders, toasters), air conditioners and mini fridges, fitness gear, musical instruments, discs and tapes, stand-alone batteries, e-bikes, scooters and hoverboards.
Haul-away
When Geek Squad or Best Buy Home Delivery brings a replacement, it will take an old TV or major appliance for $49.99. A dishwasher must be disconnected before delivery unless you also bought installation.
Without a purchase, the standalone Haul Away and Recycle service costs $199.99 for up to 2 large products (TVs, monitors, all-in-one computers, major appliances) and an unlimited number of select smaller ones. You must disconnect everything first; the crew will not unmount, uninstall or take things apart, and furniture, fitness equipment and small kitchen appliances are not taken. Hauled items cannot be returned to you.
Trade-in
The Trade-In Estimator at bestbuy.com/trade-in is the only source of quotes; Best Buy does not quote by email, chat or phone. Value depends on model, age, condition, accessories and resale prices. You must be 18 or older (19 in Alabama and Nebraska).
- Get a quote online, in the app or at a participating store.
- Prepare the device. It must turn on and work, be cleared of passcodes and signed out of accounts, with Find My Device turned off.
- Hand it over. In store, the trade is final on completion. By mail, the item must arrive within 14 days of the estimate. If inspection lowers the value, you have 72 hours to answer the new offer.
- Get paid. Best Buy says e-Gift Cards are typically issued within 5 business days after verification.
Devices with water damage, a swollen battery or pest damage are refused for both trade-in and recycling.
