Plans change. This is a summary in our own words of The Home Depot Protection Plan service page at hdprotectionplan.com and a Home Depot newsroom article, read on October 26, 2026. The protection plan page on homedepot.com could not be read (it refused our request), so the plan's full Terms and Conditions are the ones that apply; read them before you buy.
What the plan is
Home Depot launched its protection plan with Allstate on February 1, 2021. The announcement says it covers major appliances, outdoor power equipment, grills, power tools, home electronics and other products, bought in store or online. SquareTrade, an Allstate company, runs and services it. Plans bought before February 1, 2021 are still handled by Asurion.
You can buy a plan at any Home Depot store or on homedepot.com, and an eligible item can be protected for up to 90 days after you bought it.
How long coverage lasts
The plan starts working alongside the maker's warranty. While that warranty runs, covered problems go to the manufacturer, and the plan covers issues the warranty leaves out but the plan includes.
| Product | Usual maker's warranty | Plan coverage after it ends |
|---|---|---|
| Major appliances | One year | The rest of a 3 or 5 year plan term |
| General merchandise, power tools included | 90 days to one year | 2 or 3 more years |
| Water heaters | Varies | 5 more years, labor for failures and breakdowns |
Tools and the maker's warranty
For a drill, saw or mower, the first layer is the tool brand's own warranty. The plan then adds two or three years of coverage for mechanical and electrical failures, depending on the plan length you pick. If a large item still under the maker's warranty needs a repair shop, the plan page says it can reimburse pickup and delivery costs when you use a repairer the manufacturer authorizes.
Extras on appliance, mower and tractor plans
Most major appliance, tractor and mower plans include:
- Maintenance and cosmetic parts: 50% back on select parts bought at Home Depot, such as filters, hoses, knobs, shelves and grates, up to $500 per plan in total. Dents are not covered.
- Spoiled food: up to $300 per claim when a covered refrigerator or freezer fails.
- No claim reward: 30% of a major appliance plan's price back if you file no service claim during the term.
Repairs and service speed
The service page says an appointment will be available within 2 or 3 days of an approved claim, depending on your location, or you get a $50 check or Home Depot eGift Card. The 2021 announcement also described a "No Lemon" policy: a replacement or refund after three service repairs for the same issue. Check the current terms for how that applies today.
Filing a claim or canceling
- Claims: file online or call 833-763-0688, with your receipt and the item. Many claims are approved instantly.
- Receipts: registering is optional, but the receipt is required. Major appliance claims need the Order Number from the Merchandise and Service Summary.
- Canceling: within the first 90 days, bring the plan receipt to any store or call 800-466-3337 for a full refund. After that, cancel online.
