Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the Return Policy and FAQ pages on homegoods.com, read on October 27, 2026. Those pages and your local store are the ones that apply; check them before you return anything.
How long you have
HomeGoods gives you 30 days from the purchase to return an item bought in a store, at any open HomeGoods store. What you get back depends on the receipt and on timing.
| Your situation | What you get |
|---|---|
| Register receipt, within 30 days | Refund or exchange |
| Register receipt, after 30 days | Merchandise credit, if it qualifies |
| Gift receipt | Merchandise credit only |
| No receipt | Non-transferable merchandise credit only |
HomeGoods notes that local, state and federal rules can override its policy, and that other restrictions may apply.
Condition rules
Items must come back in original condition: not damaged or altered, with hangtags and the original packaging where possible. HomeGoods does not accept used items or items in unsellable condition for a refund, credit or exchange. If an item fails that check, it goes back to you at your own cost.
How you get your money
With a receipt inside 30 days, the refund goes back in the original form of payment. If you paid by check, the FAQ says HomeGoods needs 10 days before it can give a cash refund. An email receipt works in place of a paper one and follows the same policy.
Returning without a receipt
You can still return an eligible item without a receipt, but only for merchandise credit that cannot be transferred. HomeGoods asks for a valid government-issued photo ID, your name, address and signature to issue it. The name on the credit must match the photo ID shown when you use it, and the ID may be asked for again then. A signature may be required on returns with a receipt as well.
HomeGoods also says returns may be limited or refused by its refund verification system, which is part of its loss prevention program.
Holiday returns
HomeGoods posts a seasonal extension on its Return Policy page. On October 27, 2026, the page still showed last season's dates and had not yet posted dates for the 2026 holidays, so check the page again before you rely on a longer window this year.
Store credit
Merchandise credits follow the terms printed on them, which may limit transfers. The returns page says a credit issued after 30 days with a receipt can be used at any HomeGoods store.
Tips for a smooth return
- Keep the receipt or the email receipt; the FAQ says it makes returns quicker.
- Return within 30 days if you want your money back rather than store credit.
- Keep tags and packaging until you are sure the item works in your home.
- Bring a photo ID, in case you need it.
HomeGoods stock changes often, so a return now may not mean you can find the same item later. See HomeGoods Restock Days and Returning Items Without a Receipt.
