JCPenney Return Policy, Explained
JCPenney takes most returns within 60 days with a receipt, free in store or 8 dollars by mail; holiday buys from October 1 go back through January 31, 2027.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the JCPenney Return Policy page, read on October 27, 2026. The official page is the one that applies, so check it before you return anything.

Exchanges follow the same 60-day rule and can be made at any JCPenney store. Refunds go back to the original form of payment or onto a JCPenney Gift Card.
For a jcp.com order, the receipt can be the pickup receipt, the order confirmation email, the order details in your account's Shopping History, or the packing slip.
Returns without a receipt
Without a receipt, JCPenney may give you a Merchandise Return Voucher for the item's lowest selling price in the last 45 days. A valid photo ID is required for every return or exchange without a receipt, and JCPenney keeps the ID details in a company database to track how many such returns each shopper makes. JCPenney also says it uses a third-party service to monitor return activity and may limit returns or exchanges, with or without a receipt.
What JCPenney does not take back
- Gift cards and donations
- Monogrammed, personalized or altered items
- Body jewelry, ear piercing kits and false eyelashes
- Face masks and perishable foods
- Services
- jcp.com shipping and handling charges and Colorado delivery fees
Merchandise must come back with its original tags. Only special occasion dresses and men's tuxedos need the tags still attached to the item.
How to return an item
- In a store (free). Bring the item and receipt to any JCPenney store. JCPenney calls this the quickest way to get a refund or store credit, and says in-store returns are always free.
- By mail. Sign in, open the order, choose Start a Return and follow the prompts. Guests can look up the order through a link on the returns page. UPS carries the package back for a flat 8 dollar fee, taken from your refund, and it covers the whole return from one order. JCPenney says credits can take up to 4 weeks.
- Furniture and mattresses. Call customer care at 1-800-322-1189 to start the return.
Shipping charges are refunded only if JCPenney sent the wrong item, a damaged or defective item, or shipped to the wrong address.

The clock starts on the day JCPenney receives the merchandise.
Marketplace items
Products from a third-party seller go back within 30 days, either by mail with a free label from the seller or at a JCPenney store if the item fits the size and weight limits on the returns page. Items must be unused and in original packaging. The seller can cut the refund by up to 50 percent for poor condition, or by up to 80 dollars for bulky items that need special pickup.
