Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the two Marshalls return policy pages on marshalls.com, one for store purchases and one for online orders, read on October 27, 2026. Those pages are the ones that apply; check them before you return anything.
How long you have
| Purchase | Refund to your payment | After that |
|---|---|---|
| Bought in a Marshalls store | 30 days, with a valid receipt | Merchandise credit |
| Bought on marshalls.com | 40 days from the order date, with the packing slip or shipping email | Merchandise credit |
Some online items are final sale or carry their own return limits. Marshalls says this shows in the item details of the shipping confirmation email and on the product page.
The 2026 holiday window
- Store purchases made from October 4, 2026 to December 24, 2026 can be returned through January 25, 2027.
- Online purchases made in the same dates can be returned through February 4, 2027.
The normal policy applies again to purchases from December 26, 2026. A gift return with a receipt gets store credit.
Returns without a receipt
Store purchases returned without a receipt, with a gift receipt, or after 30 days get merchandise credit, not cash. For any return without a receipt you need a valid government issued photo ID, your name, address and signature. The name on that ID must match the ID you show when you spend the credit later, or the credit may not be accepted. Receipted returns are also checked by Marshalls' system, and returns can be limited or declined by its refund verification system.
What Marshalls will not take back
- Used, worn or unsellable items
- Swimwear and intimate apparel without the tickets attached
- Opened or tampered beauty items (online orders)
- Gift cards
Online orders also cannot go back to a store if the item cost over $1,000, or is a handbag or footwear over $499.99, a long occasion gown, or a luggage set. Exchanges are not offered for online orders.
How to return an online order
- In a store (free). Bring the item and the shipping email, or the order number or barcode, to a Marshalls store. Your signature is required. Card refunds are made on the spot, though your bank may take a few days to post them.
- By mail. Start the return in the online returns portal and drop it at the carrier you choose. Marshalls deducts a return shipping and handling fee of $11.99 per package, so put several items in one box when you can. Mail refunds post within 10 to 14 business days after the warehouse gets the return, in most cases. A mail return with no receipt is not accepted.
PayPal orders returned in a store get merchandise credit; returned by mail, they go back to PayPal minus the $11.99 fee. Items paid with a Marshalls gift card or a Rewards Certificate come back as merchandise credit.
Marshalls, TJ Maxx and HomeGoods
The stores share a parent company, but Marshalls says its purchases, in store or online, go back only to Marshalls, not to TJ Maxx or other sister brands. Store purchases also cannot be returned online. For a sister store, see the HomeGoods return policy.
