HP Store Return Policy, Explained

Most HP Store purchases can be returned within 30 days of delivery with a free prepaid FedEx label; software, gift cards and some printers are exceptions.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the HP.com returns page for United States customers, read on October 27, 2026. The official page is the one that applies. It covers only items, such as HP laptops, bought directly from the HP Store; items bought from another retailer follow that retailer's policy.

How long you have

You have 30 days from the date your order was delivered to start a return. If HP approves it, you get a return authorization (RMA) number, and the item must reach HP within 30 days of that authorization. HP says late returns may get a reduced refund or none.

HP sometimes extends the window for select products through promotions. Problems with the delivery itself, such as a lost, damaged or misdelivered package, must be reported within 10 days of delivery or of the last tracking scan.

Restocking fees

HP's page notes a change in terms after August 1, 2026. Before that date, returns could carry a restocking fee of up to 15%. Under the current terms, HP says it charges no restocking fee and provides a free return label for eligible returns started within the 30 days when:

  • The product is defective
  • HP made a shipping, configuration or processing error
  • You are a consumer who bought for personal use
  • You are a business that bought for company use (orders under a purchase order or payment terms follow that agreement)

A restocking fee of up to 15% of the price paid can still apply to purchases for unauthorized resale or orders that break HP's terms of sale.

What you cannot return

  • Opened software, software downloads and upgrades
  • Gift cards, except where the law requires
  • Large format printers such as DesignJet models, unless defective or sent in error
  • Anything sold as not returnable
  • Bulk orders that break the HP Store terms
  • Items from the HP Parts Store, Instant Ink, the All-In Plan or HP Technical Support
  • HP Store orders placed with a purchase order or on payment terms

How to return an item

  1. Request the return online from your order and pick the product. Have the serial number at hand.
  2. Get the label. HP says requests under $250 are usually processed right away; requests over $250 get a review within 4 business hours. The prepaid FedEx label arrives by email as a PDF and a QR code.
  3. Pack it in the original packaging with every accessory, power adapter and document. A sturdy replacement box is fine if the original is gone.
  4. Drop it off at a staffed FedEx Office or a participating retail location, and keep the receipt. HP says not to use a FedEx drop box.

Back up and wipe your data first. Customers in Alaska may have to pay for and ship returns themselves.

Refunds

HP allows up to 5 business days to validate a return, then the refund can take up to 5 more business days to appear, depending on your bank. Refunds go only to the original payment method. For change-of-mind returns, original shipping charges are not refunded, and financed purchases do not get loan interest back.

Returning part of a bundle can cost you the bundle discount, and HP Rewards points earned on the purchase are deducted.

Exchanges and defects

HP needs the original product back before it ships a replacement, and replaces a damaged or defective item with the same or a similar product.
