Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Newegg's Knowledge Base articles on its return policy, refurbished items and item return policies, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them and the product page before you buy.

Open box and refurbished are not the same

Newegg treats the two very differently:

The Newegg open box return policy

Newegg's return policy lists open box items under its Final Sale policy. That means they cannot be returned for a refund or a replacement. There is one exception: if the item arrives damaged or defective, Newegg says it can honor a replacement request when you contact Customer Service within 15 days of delivery. Beyond that, any help comes from the manufacturer's warranty, which you claim by contacting the manufacturer yourself.

Read the listing carefully before you buy.

What Newegg calls refurbished

Newegg describes refurbished items as returned products that were tested and restored to manufacturer specifications. Examples it gives include items returned for a defect or for another reason, items never used but with the factory seal opened, items returned because the box was damaged in shipping, and units used in field tests, displays or demos.

Its refurbished standards list four steps: previous data erased and the system reset, professional cleaning inside and out, inspection of key components with parts repaired or replaced as needed, and full diagnostic testing with a final quality check.

Refurbished grades

A listing may show a grade from the refurbishing vendor, sometimes with no other notes on condition:

  • A: like new, with minimal to no scuffs and no scratches or dents.
  • B: may have dents, chips or scuffs; the keyboard may be shiny or worn and the screen may have hairline scratches.
  • C: may have dents, cracks, chips or scuffs; the screen may have scratches or dark spots.

Newegg notes that warranty support outside its return policy generally comes from the vendor that refurbished the item, not the manufacturer. Its policy table also lists ABS refurbished desktops as covered by a manufacturer's warranty only, and a separate policy called 90-Day Refreshed with refund or replacement within 90 days of delivery.

How to check a listing's policy

  1. Open the product page and click the Warranty & Returns tab.
  2. Look under Return Policies for the refund window and the replacement window.
  3. If the seller is a Marketplace seller, that seller's policy applies, not Newegg's.

Other costs to know

Newegg says a 15% restocking fee may apply when some categories, such as hard drives, motherboards, graphics cards, projectors and TVs, come back opened. Items received damaged or defective are not charged that fee.
