Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Pottery Barn's Returns page and its international return page, read on October 27, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you send anything back.

How long you have

Pottery Barn counts the window from the day you receive the order, not the day you place it.

ItemReturn window
Most eligible items30 days from receipt
Quick Ship upholstery7 days from receipt
Items bought from a Pottery Barn registry90 days from the event or from purchase, whichever is later

You need the original receipt or a gift receipt. Pottery Barn lists returns without either as not eligible.

Items you cannot return

Pottery Barn's list of items it will not take back or exchange:

  • Monogrammed items
  • Mattresses
  • Gift cards
  • Made to Order items, including custom rugs, furniture, faucets and shower sets
  • Special order items and custom upholstery
  • Final sale items, which are the ones with prices ending in .97
  • Items damaged through normal wear and tear

If you are buying a sofa or a rug you are unsure about, check whether it is Made to Order or custom before you pay. Those are the pieces that cannot come back.

How to return

Pottery Barn gives three ways, depending on what you bought:

  1. UPS drop-off. Start the return online. Pottery Barn creates a UPS label, and you take the package to a UPS location. Pack the item in the original manufacturer's box with enough padding. Labels for online returns can be reprinted for 7 days.
  2. By phone. Furniture returns go through Customer Care at 1-888-779-5176.
  3. In a store. Non-furniture items can go back to your local Pottery Barn store.

Pottery Barn says that, depending on the reason for the return, you may have to pay the return shipping. Online returns only work for items that were shipped to the United States, US territories included, or to APO and FPO addresses.

How you get your money back

What you bringRefund
Original receiptOriginal form of payment
Gift receiptMerchandise Credit for the amount on the gift receipt
Cash or check purchase over $100A company check by mail, which can take 14 business days

Delivery fees are not refunded. Pottery Barn also says earlier purchases do not get price adjustments, so a later sale price does not earn you a partial refund. If a return for Merchandise Credit is over $10,000, Pottery Barn gives you $10,000 that day and mails more Merchandise Credit Cards for the rest.

Orders shipped outside the US

International orders need a return authorization from the call center and cannot be returned in any Pottery Barn store. Refunds are credited by Pottery Barn's partner Borderfree in the currency you paid in. Gift cards, monogrammed, personalized and special order items, final sale items and items worn through normal use cannot be returned from abroad either.

Before you return

  • Keep the receipt or ask for a gift receipt when you buy a present.
  • Count the days from delivery, and only 7 for Quick Ship upholstery.
  • Call before you try to return furniture; stores take non-furniture items only.
