Walmart Coupon Policy, Explained
Walmart takes paper manufacturer coupons that scan, one per item and four identical ones per household a day, and it never takes expired coupons.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of the Coupon Policy on Walmart's Policies and Guidelines page, which Walmart dated July 22, 2025 and which we read on October 26, 2026. The official page is the one that applies; check it before you shop.
Which coupons Walmart takes
The policy covers Walmart stores and other Walmart Inc. properties in the United States, but not Sam's Club. Walmart accepts paper manufacturer coupons for products it sells. The coupon has to carry a scannable GS1 barcode, scan at the register and check out against the manufacturer's offer file. Printed internet coupons are fine on the same terms, as long as they are clear, in proportion, scan properly and show no sign of changes. Walmart refuses printed internet coupons for free items that need no purchase.
| Coupon type | Accepted? |
|---|---|
| Paper manufacturer coupon that scans | Yes |
| Printed internet manufacturer coupon | Yes, if it scans and looks unaltered |
| Buy one get one free (BOGO) manufacturer coupon | Yes |
| Coupon shown on a phone screen | No |
| Expired coupon | No |
| Competitor or other retailer coupon | No |
| Doubled or tripled coupon value | No |
| Coupon with a UPC-A barcode | No |
| Vouchers, gift certificates, bottle caps | No |
Does Walmart take expired coupons?
No. The policy says so twice, once in the guidelines and again in the list of exclusions. A coupon also has to match the item exactly, down to brand, size, quantity, color and flavor, or the register will deny it.
Limits per item and per day
- One paper manufacturer coupon per item, for purchases in a store.
- No more than four identical coupons per household per day, unless the coupon itself says otherwise.
- No cap on how many different coupons you use in one transaction.
- Walmart may limit quantities to typical retail amounts, except where state law forbids it (the policy names New Mexico).
If a coupon is worth more than the item, Walmart applies it only up to the item's price. There is no cash back, and the extra value does not move to the rest of the order. That rule also holds for WIC and SNAP purchases.
BOGO coupons
A buy one get one free coupon needs two qualifying items at checkout: one rings up at full price and the second is discounted by its full price. You cannot pair two BOGO coupons to get both items free, and Walmart turns down BOGO coupons that give a percentage off the second item instead of making it free.
What you cannot use a coupon on
Manufacturer coupons do not work on prepaid products or gift cards. Copied, altered, sold or transferred coupons are void.
Returns of couponed items
When you return something you bought with a manufacturer coupon, the refund leaves out the coupon's value and you do not get the coupon back. Walmart also keeps the right to refuse such returns. For the general return rules, see our page on store return policies.
Who decides
The policy gives store management the final say and lets Walmart refuse or limit any coupon, for example when the items do not look meant for personal use or gifting. Walmart can change the policy at any time.
