Bike Size Chart by Height, and Mountain vs Hybrid

Adult bike frames are sized XS to XL by rider height, about 5 feet to 6 feet 4 inches on a typical chart; mountain bikes and hybrids differ in tires and fit.

The short answer

Most adult bikes come in letter sizes, XS to XL, matched to rider height. Start with the maker's height chart, then fine-tune with the seat and handlebars. Some low-cost bikes come in one frame size meant to fit most adults, and the wheel size then guides the height range.

Bike size chart by height

Schwinn publishes this general chart for its bikes that come in several frame sizes:

Frame sizeRider height
XS5'0" to 5'3"
S5'3" to 5'7"
M5'7" to 5'10"
L5'10" to 6'1"
XL6'1" to 6'4"

Other brands draw the lines a little differently, and some list frame sizes in inches or centimeters instead of letters. Always check the chart on the page of the bike you are buying.

Schwinn's mountain bikes use a single frame size and come in wheel sizes from 24 to 29 inches, with the recommended height range given in each product description.

What if you are between sizes?

Trek's mountain bike guide says height is the easiest way to pick a size, but many riders fall between two. It suggests comparing reach and effective top tube on the geometry chart rather than standover height alone:

  • A longer reach gives a longer wheelbase, which is steadier at speed and roomier for a long torso or long arms.
  • A shorter reach gives a shorter wheelbase, which is more nimble and easier to manage for a shorter torso.

After choosing a frame, Schwinn's guide covers the small adjustments: raise or lower the seat for leg room, slide it forward or back for hip position, and change the handlebar angle or stem length for reach.

Mountain bike vs hybrid bike

Mountain bikeHybrid bike
Built forOff-road trailsPavement, bike paths, light gravel
TiresWide and knobby, 2.0 to 2.6 inFairly wide, usually on 700c rims
Tire pressureLow, about 18 to 35 psi (Cannondale)Higher, for a faster roll
SuspensionFront only (hardtail) or front and rearSome have a front suspension fork
HandlebarsFlat or riser, about 75 to 82 cm wideFlat, with an upright riding position

Cannondale notes that 27.5 and 29 inch wheels roll faster and over holes and ruts more smoothly than the 26 inch wheels of early mountain bikes; dirt jump bikes keep 26 inch wheels for tricks. Schwinn describes hybrids as sitting between cruisers and sporty bikes, in two main styles: comfort hybrids and fitness hybrids.

Pick a mountain bike if you ride dirt trails with roots and rocks. Pick a hybrid for commuting, paved paths and the odd gravel trail.

How we count

Of the 66 mountain bikes listed on Wiki Shopping on October 26, 2026, 34 state 26 inch wheels and 6 state 27.5 inch wheels; the rest do not state a wheel size in a way we can read.
