Mini PC vs Desktop Computer, Explained

A mini PC is a small desktop that saves space and power; a tower gives more room for graphics cards and upgrades, which matters most for gaming.

The short answer

A mini PC is a desktop computer shrunk to a box small enough to sit behind a monitor. It does everyday work well, uses little power and stays quiet. A full-size desktop takes more room but fits a large graphics card, more drives and later upgrades.

If your heaviest tasks are browsing, office apps, video calls and streaming, a mini PC is usually enough. If you want high-end gaming or heavy video work, a tower is the safer choice.

The upgrade and space points match ENERGY STAR's buying guide, which notes that compact computers suit small spaces but are harder to upgrade and repair, while full-size desktops are the easiest to work on.

What a mini PC is used for

Lenovo's guide lists common uses that play to a mini PC's small size and low power draw:

  • Home and office work: web browsing, documents, email and video calls.
  • Media center: tucked under a TV and connected by HDMI.
  • Always-on jobs: file sharing, media hosting or a home automation server.
  • Light development: coding tools and small virtual machines.

Most run Windows or Linux. On Wiki Shopping, 211 mini PCs ship with Windows 11 Pro and 35 with Linux.

Is a mini PC good for gaming?

It can be, within limits. Lenovo says many mini PCs handle games well when they have capable graphics, and some are built for gaming, but they are usually not as powerful as a full gaming tower.

Our listings show why. On October 26, 2026, 46 of the 804 mini PCs on Wiki Shopping list a dedicated graphics card, against 501 of the 1,142 desktops. Most mini PCs rely on graphics built into the processor, such as AMD's Radeon 780M (36 mini PCs) or 680M (29). For the most demanding games, a tower with its own graphics card has more headroom.

Memory and storage

Windows 11 needs at least 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs need 16GB. Among mini PCs on Wiki Shopping, 16GB is the most common RAM size (205), and 247 list DDR5 memory against 136 with DDR4.

Lenovo notes that some mini PCs give easy access to memory and storage, while others are closed systems. Check the maker's page for the exact model if you plan to upgrade later. Our guide to how much RAM a computer needs explains the sizes.
