Monitor Size and Resolution: 1080p vs 1440p vs 4K

Pick monitor size and resolution together: a 27-inch 1440p screen packs about 109 pixels per inch against 82 for 27-inch 1080p, so it looks sharper.

The short answer

Size and resolution only make sense together. Screen size is the diagonal in inches; resolution is the number of pixels across and down. Spread the same pixels over a bigger screen and each pixel gets larger, so the picture looks softer.

The figure that ties them together is pixel density, in pixels per inch (PPI). We work it out from the resolution and the diagonal: the square root of (width squared plus height squared), divided by the diagonal.

Size and resolutionPixelsPixel density
24 inch, 1080p1920 x 1080about 92 PPI
27 inch, 1080p1920 x 1080about 82 PPI
27 inch, 1440p2560 x 1440about 109 PPI
34 inch ultrawide, 1440p3440 x 1440about 110 PPI
32 inch, 4K3840 x 2160about 138 PPI
27 inch, 4K3840 x 2160about 163 PPI

1080p vs 1440p

A 1440p screen has 2560 x 1440 pixels, about 1.8 times as many as 1080p (1920 x 1080). At 24 inches, 1080p works out to about 92 PPI. Stretch the same 1080p over 27 inches and it drops to about 82 PPI, while 1440p at 27 inches reaches about 109 PPI, so text and edges look finer.

More pixels also mean more work for the graphics card in games: a 1440p frame has 1.8 times the pixels of a 1080p frame, and 4K has 4 times. If you game on a modest graphics card, 1080p or 1440p is easier to drive at a high refresh rate.

What size monitor do I need

Start with your desk depth and what you do:

  • 24 inch: fits shallow desks; pairs well with 1080p.
  • 27 inch: room for two windows side by side; pairs with 1440p or 4K.
  • 32 inch: a large work area; 4K keeps text sharp at this size.
  • 34 inch ultrawide: a wide shape for timelines, spreadsheets and games that support it.

On Wiki Shopping, 27 inch is the most listed size with 144 monitors, ahead of 34 inch with 85; 24 inch has 25 and 32 inch has 20. Wiki Shopping also lists 140 portable monitors, 115 of them with screens from 13.3 to 18.5 inches.

What does IPS mean on a monitor

IPS stands for in-plane switching, a type of LCD panel. Its liquid crystals stay parallel to the glass and turn within that plane, which gives steady color from wide viewing angles. It was developed to fix the poor viewing angles and color of older TN panels. The trade-offs are lower contrast than some other designs and, in older panels, slower response.

Other panel types you will see are VA and OLED. On Wiki Shopping, 274 monitors use an IPS panel, 56 a VA panel and 22 OLED.

How we count

Resolution, size and panel type are read from each monitor's store listing. Monitors that do not state a value are left out of that count. Pixel density is our own calculation from the resolution and diagonal. The counts change as listings are added or removed.
