Laptop Screen Sizes, Explained

A laptop's screen size is the diagonal of the display in inches; 16 and 15.6 inches are the two most common sizes among the laptops we list.

The short answer

The screen size in a laptop listing is the length of the display's diagonal, corner to corner, in inches. It is the same way TV screens are measured. It does not include the frame around the screen, and it says nothing about the laptop's weight.

Of the 839 laptops listed on Wiki Shopping on October 23, 2026, the most common size is 16 inches (264 laptops), followed by 15.6 inches (231 laptops) and 14 inches (113 laptops).

Why the diagonal can mislead

Two screens with the same diagonal can have different shapes. A wider screen (for example 16:9) is shorter for the same diagonal than a taller one (for example 16:10 or 3:2). If you work with long documents, a taller screen shows more lines at once; if you watch a lot of video, a wider one fills more of the screen with the picture. The listing or the maker's page usually gives the aspect ratio or the resolution, which tells you the shape.

Sizes with fewer laptops, such as 13, 14.2 and 15.3 inches, are grouped as "Other sizes" because each has too few laptops for its own page.

How to choose

  • Carry it or leave it on a desk? A smaller screen usually means a smaller, lighter body. The laptops for travel and light laptops pages filter for that.
  • Want more room to work? Larger screens show more at once without an external monitor. The 17-inch laptops page groups the larger screens.
  • Check weight separately. Screen size and weight are different specs, so compare both before you buy.
  • Look at refresh rate if you play games. Our guide to refresh rate explains the Hz number that often sits next to the screen size.

How we count

Each laptop on Wiki Shopping has its screen size read from the store listing. A laptop whose listing gives no size is counted as "Not stated". The counts change as listings are added or removed.
