PC Case Sizes: Full Tower vs Mid Tower vs Mini

A mid tower fits a standard ATX board and suits most builds, a full tower adds room for big boards and cooling, and small cases trade space for size.

The short answer

PC case sizes are named by how big a motherboard they hold and how much room they leave for parts:

  • Small form factor (SFF): the smallest cases, usually for Mini ITX boards, sometimes Micro ATX.
  • Mini tower: usually takes Mini ITX and Micro ATX boards, with more room to build than an SFF case.
  • Mid tower: fits ATX and larger boards. Corsair calls it the standard desktop size.
  • Full tower: the largest, made to fit any motherboard, with room for several radiators and custom water cooling.

Case names are not a formal standard, so the motherboard sizes a case lists matter more than the label.

Mid tower vs full tower

For most builds the choice is a mid tower. It takes a full ATX board and, in many current models, a large graphics card. Corsair notes that some versions of the largest current cards are well over 32 cm (13 inches) long and may not fit every mid tower, so check the case's maximum graphics card length against the card you plan to use.

A full tower makes sense when you need the space: an extended ATX (E-ATX) board, more drives, or a custom liquid cooling loop with several radiators, pumps and tubing. Corsair describes full towers as increasingly rare.

On Wiki Shopping, 86 PC cases list a mid tower size and 16 list a full tower size.

Case size follows motherboard size

The board you choose sets the smallest case you can use. Corsair gives these board sizes:

BoardSizeMemory slotsTypical case
ATX305 x 244 mmFourMid tower or full tower
Micro ATX244 x 244 mmFourMini tower or larger
Mini ITX170 x 170 mmTwoSmall form factor or larger

A smaller board fits in a larger case built for bigger boards, but not the other way around. Our motherboard form factor guide covers the boards in more detail.

Case listings on Wiki Shopping also state which boards they fit: 100 cases list ATX, 33 Micro ATX, 31 Mini ITX and 31 E-ATX. One case can list several sizes.

Small cases: what you give up

Small form factor and mini tower cases take less desk space, but there is less room inside. A Mini ITX board has one full-length expansion slot and two memory slots. Smaller cases also limit the size of coolers and graphics cards, so check each part's fit before buying. Some compact cases still take large parts: Corsair lists a Micro ATX small form factor case of its own that fits a 360 mm radiator in the roof and graphics cards up to 365 mm long.

On Wiki Shopping, 9 cases list small form factor and 6 list mini tower.

What to check before you buy

  • Motherboard support: the board sizes the case lists.
  • Graphics card length: the case's maximum, against your card's length.
  • Radiator and cooler support: sizes and positions, if you plan liquid cooling or a tall air cooler.
  • Airflow and panels: 82 cases on Wiki Shopping list a mesh or airflow front, 106 a tempered glass panel and 74 include fans.

How we count

Tower size, supported boards and features are read from each case's store listing. Of the 230 PC cases listed on October 26, 2026, 117 state a tower size; the rest are left out of those counts. Counts change as listings are added or removed.
