Amazon Price Adjustment After Purchase, Explained
Amazon's help pages offer one price drop guarantee, for qualifying pre-orders; for items already bought they describe no price adjustment.

Store policies change. This is a summary in our own words of Amazon's pricing help pages, read on October 26, 2026. The official pages are the ones that apply; check them before you count on a refund.
What Amazon's pages say
Amazon's "Pricing" help section has two pages: the Pre-Order Price Guarantee and Strike-Through Pricing and Savings. We found no Amazon help page that offers to refund the difference when the price of an item you already bought goes down.
| Situation | What Amazon's help pages say |
|---|---|
| Pre-order that shows "Pre-order Price Guarantee" | You pay the lowest Amazon.com price up to the end of release day |
| Item in your cart | The cart always shows the latest price; adding an item does not hold its price |
| Order not yet shipped | You are not charged until the order enters the shipping process, and you can cancel items that have not shipped |
| Item already delivered | No price adjustment page found |
The Pre-order Price Guarantee
The guarantee covers not-yet-released items that show the "Pre-order Price Guarantee" message on the product page. For a physical item, Amazon charges the lowest price it offered between your order and the end of the release date. For digital games and software, Kindle books and Amazon Music, the cut-off is the moment the content is released.
The fine print matters:
- It applies only to items sold by Amazon.com, not other sellers (certain digital music albums aside), and not to Amazon's other country sites.
- Items without the message do not qualify, even if they are pre-orders.
- Lower prices that require joining a program do not count.
If your order is already in the shipping process and the price falls before the end of release day, Amazon says it refunds the difference to your credit or debit card within 48 hours. If the price changes before the item ships, the new price appears in Your Account within 24 to 48 hours. If you paid another way, Amazon asks you to contact it.
Why the cart price can change
Amazon's Shopping Cart Prices page says the price in your cart always follows the product page, so it can go up or down after you add an item. Putting something in your cart does not reserve its price.
If the price drops before your order ships
Because you are charged when the order enters the shipping process, an order that has not shipped can still be canceled from Your Orders. Amazon says items shipped and sold by Amazon can be canceled until they enter the shipping process, and third-party seller orders can typically be canceled within one business day. Amazon's pages do not promise a lower price will still be there if you reorder.
Reading "List Price" and "Typical Price"
Amazon says a Typical Price is the 90-day median price customers paid, and a "Lowest Price in XX Days" label means the current price is at or below the lowest featured price in that period. Our own readings show how often prices move: see how often Amazon prices change.
