Store hours change, and most chains post Christmas hours only a few weeks ahead. This is a summary in our own words of what stores and news outlets said, read on October 26, 2026. Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday, December 25.
Confirmed for 2026
When we checked, The Home Depot was the only large chain whose own page listed its Christmas Day 2026 plan:
| Store | Christmas Day, December 25, 2026 | Where it says so |
|---|---|---|
| The Home Depot | Closed | Home Depot holiday hours page |
Walmart's pages block automated readers, Target's store pages look only 14 days ahead, and Costco's fall holiday page listed only Thanksgiving, so none of them showed a 2026 Christmas Day line yet.
What was open and closed in 2025
These are not 2026 hours. The store pages for 2026 could not be read or did not yet list Christmas, so this section is as reported by ABC7 (December 23, 2025) and FOX 29 (updated December 23, 2025). Both lists agree on these chains:
| Closed on Christmas Day 2025 | Open on Christmas Day 2025 |
|---|---|
| Walmart, Target, Costco, Kroger, Trader Joe's, Aldi | CVS, Walgreens (FOX 29: select 24-hour stores) |
ABC7 also listed Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe's, Kohl's, Macy's, Sam's Club, Publix and Whole Foods as closed, and said CVS and Walgreens hours varied by store. Both outlets told readers to call ahead, since a store near you may differ. Confirm with the store before you rely on this list.
Is Walmart open on Christmas?
Walmart was closed on Christmas Day 2025, according to both reports above. We could not read a 2026 schedule from Walmart itself, so check walmart.com or call your store in December.
Is Target open on Christmas?
Target was closed on Christmas Day 2025, according to both reports. Target's own store pages show hours only two weeks ahead; look at your store page after mid December for the 2026 answer.
Is Walgreens or CVS open on Christmas?
Pharmacies are the main exception. Both 2025 reports listed CVS as open and Walgreens as open at least in part; FOX 29 said only select 24-hour Walgreens stores, and ABC7 said hours varied by location and advised calling for pharmacy hours. If you need a prescription filled, check the pharmacy hours, not only the store hours.
Is Costco open on Christmas?
Tasting Table, writing in 2025, said Costco warehouses in the United States close on seven holidays a year, Christmas Day among them, and both 2025 reports list Costco as closed. Costco's warehouse pages list upcoming closures, so check yours closer to the date.
How to check your store
- Open the store locator on the chain's own site and pick your store; holiday closures appear there first.
- Look for a holiday hours page in the chain's newsroom, where Home Depot posted its full year.
- For a prescription, call the pharmacy itself rather than the main store line.
- Shop the day before: see Christmas Eve store hours for early closings.
